KEY SEQUENCE
  • Gannon took advantage of a low-scoring start to get it to within a goal with less than 10 minutes to play in the first half against the nationally ranked Lakers. Mercyhurst doubled the lead just over a minute later, and then rattled off five more scores in the final five minutes of the period to build a 9-2 advantage.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Mercyhurst jumped out to a 2-0 lead early before the game settled into a defensive battle for much of the first half. A turnover forced by Jessica Hudak (Pittsburgh, Pa./Seton-LaSalle) got the Lady Knights started the other way near the midway point of the half, and Alexa Bower (Rochester, N.Y./Brighton) got them on the board with a goal at the 14:41 mark.
  • The Lakers went up 3-1, but Hudak drew Gannon back to within one with her finish with 9:33 left in the half. The hosts answered quickly, and although Eileen Kehrig (Fairport, N.Y./Fairport) grabbed the ensuing draw and Erin Rotondo (Manalapan, N.J./Manalapan) got a shot that forced a save, Mercyhurst got the ball back and commanded possession over the next five minutes to build a 9-2 lead with 1:35 left.
  • Each team got  a shot on their first two possessions of the second half, and the Lakers were the first to capitalize, pushing the lead to eight less than four minutes in. Hudak made the hustle play to grab the ground ball after a Hurst save, and Rachel Tufts (Erie, Pa./McDowell) snapped the seven-goal run with a score of her own with 23:35 remaining to draw the Knights to within 10-3.
  • Tufts added her second of the game on a free position at the 15:14 mark to make it 12-4, but Mercyhurst wouldn't let Gannon get any closer, finishing off the game with the final four goals.

GAME NOTES
  • It was the second straight game with two goals for Tufts, who added two caused turnovers, a ground ball and a draw control.
  • Renwick stopped 11 shots for the second consecutive game. The sophomore has picked up at least 11 saves in five of her last six games.
  • Rotondo was held scoreless for the first time in nine games this season, and the first time in 15 games dating back to last year. The junior still had an impact though, leading Gannon with four ground balls and also grabbing three draw controls.
  • Hudak scored her first goal since netting two against Wheeling Jesuit March 14. The junior also added two caused turnovers and a pair of ground balls.

UP NEXT
  • Gannon continues a tough stretch, hosting No. 7 West Chester Saturday morning.
  • The 11 a.m. first draw from McConnell Family Stadium will feature live video and live stats.
  • The Lady Knights are 3-19 all-time against the Golden Rams.
  • West Chester is 8-2 (4-1 PSAC) this season after a tight 9-8 victory against No. 15 Mercy Tuesday afternoon.
