KEY SEQUENCE
  • While Gannon jumped in front during the fourth inning, it was a five-run fifth inning that put the Golden Knights ahead comfortably. Dominic Mori (Greensburg, Pa./Hempfield Area) cleared the bases with a triple to right center, pushing GU to a 7-2 edge. It proved to be more than enough for starter Deven Judy (Belle Vernon, Pa./Belle Vernon Area), who battled through five Gannon errors in a complete game effort to remain undefeated this season.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Elijah Quiceno (Berryville, Va./Stonebridge) brought home the first run of the afternoon with a sacrifice fly to right field that plated Ian Steighner (Chicora, Pa./Butler), who reached on a leadoff single. UPJ responded to tie the game at one with a Dylan Broderick single.
  • The Mountain Cats eventually pulled ahead in the bottom of the third, scoring the go-ahead run for a 2-1 advantage. It would be the last run of the opening game for the Mountain Cats as Judy began to mow through the lineup the rest of the way. Gannon answered back in the top of the fourth, crossing home twice to take a 3-2 lead. Luke Callahan (Chardon, Ohio / Chardon ) doubled home Ian Hess (Canonsburg, Pa. / Canon-McMillian ) before Trey Zeroski (Clinton, Pa. / West Allegheny) smacked a 3-2 pitch back up the middle.
  • Following a double play to end the fourth, Gannon piled on five runs in the top half of the fifth to surge ahead 8-2. A bases loaded walk to Hess accounted for the first run of the frame, and Dominic Mori (Greensburg, Pa./Hempfield Area) cleared the bases in the next at-bat with a three-run triple to right center for a 7-2 edge. Mori eventually came around to score on a throwing error as Gannon pushed its lead to 8-2.
  • Quiceno capped the Gannon scoring with a double to left center, scoring Hamm for a 9-2 edge.
