KEY SEQUENCE
  • Gannon got off to a quick start in the third game of the conference series with IUP, driving across four runs in its first trip to the plate, providing Eric Sapp (Deerfield, Ohio/Southeast) plenty of early run support on his way to a complete game effort on the mound. The Golden Knights blew the game open with a pair of three-run home runs, coming off the bats of Justin Hamm (Pittsburgh, Pa. / North Allegheny) and Brandon Wetherholt (Gibsonia, Pa./Mars Area) on their way to a series victory.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • With just one out, Jared Beach (McDonald, Pa./Canon-McMillan) cracked a double down the left field line to plate Wetherholt and Ian Steighner (Chicora, Pa./Butler) for a quick 2-0 lead. Extra-base hits from Ian Hess (Canonsburg, Pa. / Canon-McMillian ) and Hamm doubled the Gannon lead to 4-0 in the bottom of the first. The Crimson Hawks answered in the top of the second, trimming the deficit in half with two runs off Sapp.
  • Ryan Kalbfus (Penfield, N.Y./Penfield) raced home on a wild pitch in the second, scoring from third for a 5-2 lead. The Golden Knights moved ahead comfortably following a three-run homer from Hamm, scoring Hess and Elijah Quiceno (Berryville, Va./Stonebridge) for an 8-2 advantage.
  • While Sapp continued mowing down IUP batters, the Gannon offense wasn't finished and put up five runs in the bottom of the fifth. Luke Callahan (Chardon, Ohio / Chardon ) brought home a run on a single to left, but Hamm was gunned down following a relay throw as GU led 9-3. A throwing error pushed the lead to 10-3 and Wetherholt smacked a three-run blast over the netting in right center for a 13-3 cushion for the Maroon and Gold.
  • Sapp came out to finish the game on the mound, surrendering a run in the sixth on his way to a victory as Gannon rolled to a 13-4 win in game one.
  • Ten different players have smacked a home run for the Golden Knights this season.

GAME NOTES
  • Sapp picked up his fourth win of the year after allowing six hits, four runs (three earned) and two walks. He punched out a season-high 12 batters and earned his first complete game of the 2019 campaign.
  • Hamm was locked in at the plate, picking up the first three-hit game of his college career. It was the fifth multi-hit effort of the season for Hamm, who cracked his third homer of the season while extending his hitting streak to four games in the win.
  • Steighner, Wetherholt and Kalbfus also notched multiple hits in the victory. Hamm, Wetherholt and Beach picked up at least two RBI for the Golden Knights in game one.
  • Sapp tossed four scoreless innings on the mound for Gannon and becomes the fourth starting pitcher to fire a complete game this year.
  • Gannon did most of its damage offensively against IUP starter Brian Albert, who surrendered eight runs. However, the Golden Knights rudely welcomed Billy Welsh out of the bullpen by smacking four hits and scoring four runs on the reliever.

GAME TWO: THE RUNDOWN
  • Final Score: IUP 9, Gannon 7
  • Records: Gannon (22-10, 12-4 PSAC) | IUP (9-23, 3-13 PSAC)

KEY SEQUENCE
  • Back-to-back homers from Beach and Hess highlighted what looked to be another blowout victory for the Golden Knights, but the Crimson Hawks scored seven runs over the course of the final two innings to salvage a game and leave McConnell Family Stadium with a shocking victory.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Scoring was a little tougher to come by to begin the nightcap, as starters Tyler Adams and Jarod Morrison (Hamilton, Ohio/Hamilton) traded zeros in the first two innings. A pair of runs in the top of the third gave IUP a rare lead against the Golden Knights, but it was short lived as Gannon plated three runs in the bottom of the third.
  • A bases loaded walk administered to Quiceno occurred prior to Beach being hit by a pitch, which brought home a pair of runs. The Golden Knights took the lead on a sacrifice fly lifted to center from Hess.
  • Morrison collected two outs in the fourth before giving way to Benjamin Visnesky (West Mifflin, Pa. / West Mifflin Area ), who whirled a timely strikeout of Matt Swartz on a 2-2 pitch to end a scoring threat from the Crimson Hawks. While the Gannon offense continued to churn out at-bats, a sacrifice fly from Hamm increased the GU lead to 4-2.
  • The Gannon offense brought home three more runs, coming off back-to-back homers from Beach (two runs) and Hess for a 7-2 lead. The Crimson Hawks got to work, fiercely rallying to score seven runs between the sixth and seventh innings for a 9-7 lead.
  • Gannon had runners at the corners in the bottom of the seventh and the winning run at the plate, but Nick Kuhn got a clutch groundout to end the game.

GAME NOTES
  • Steighner was the lone Golden Knight with multiple hits in game two, going 2-3 with a run scored.
  • John Bender (Wilson, N.Y. / Wilson), who had not allowed a run in his previous three outings, was tagged with the loss after surrendering four runs (two) earned over the final 1.1 innings. He previously recorded a save in each of the first two games of the IUP series last Saturday.
  • Beach launched his team-leading 11th homer of the season while Hess followed it up with his eighth of the year.
  • Chris Eisel was excellent at the plate for IUP in game two, going 4-4 with a walk and four RBI. He cracked the go-ahead homer with a two-run shot to left center in the seventh inning.

UP NEXT
  • Gannon continues a busy week of baseball with a nonconference matchup against Tiffin on Wednesday, April 17 at 2:00 p.m.
  • The single nine inning affair will feature live stats and live video from McConnell Family Stadium.
  • Tiffin will be taking the field for the first time in a week, looking to bounce back from a 4-2 setback to Malone University on April 10.
