HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Campbell Ruh (Walnut, Calif./Lutheran High School of Orange County) opened the game with a goal less than 30 seconds in for a 1-0 lead - and Nicole Wiemken (Napoleon, Ohio /Napoleon) broke a stretch without a goal for both sides - handing the Lady Knights a 2-1 lead at the 4:53 mark in the first quarter.
  • Wiemken posted her second straight goal at 2:28 in the opening frame, but the Lakers responded back once again to trim their deficit to 3-2. Ruh fired home her second of the quarter and final tally of the frame for the Lady Knights with 50 seconds remaining for a 4-2 GU edge.
  • Scoring chances were harder to come by in the second quarter for both sides, and stellar goaltending from Isabelle Vieira (Erie, Pa./Northwest Pennsylvania Collegiate Academy) helped keep Gannon in the mix. With the score tied at five entering the third quarter, Mercyhurst answered a Wiemken marker with three straight goals of their own.
  • Gannon roared back, ending the third with a goal from Kelly Fehr (Erie, Pa./Villia Maria) and opening the fourth quarter with the first four goals of the period. Ruh, Sydney Fountain (Okemos, Mich./Okemos) and Fehr lifted Gannon to an 11-8 lead, allowing the Lady Knights to withstand two late goals from the Lakers to hold on for the 11-0 win.

GAME NOTES
  • Vieira tallied 10 saves in goal, and several blocks from the Gannon defense limited the Lakers offensive chances, particularly in the second quarter.
  • In addition to a pair of goals, Fountain passed out two assists for four points on the day.
  • Wiemken posted a game-high four goals and Lauren Rinderle (Erie, Pa./Fairview) posted a game-high three steals.
  • Ruh, Fountain, Wiemken and Fehr all posted at least five shots for the Lady Knights in a balanced offensive output.
  • With a win today, Gannon matched its win total from last season.
  • Gannon posted its second victory over Mercyhurst this season, with the first coming on March 16 in the SFU Open.
