GAME ONE: THE RUNDOWN

KEY SEQUENCE
  • The Gannon softball team tallied its fifth shutout victory of the season Saturday afternoon with a dominating 8-0 win over cross-town rival Mercyhurst at McConnell Family Stadium.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Maria Taliani (Cheswick, Pa./Deer Lakes) drew a bases-loaded walk in the first inning to give the Lady Knights an early 1-0 lead.
  • Sarah Ingerick (Middlebury Center, Pa./Wellsboro Area) sparked a four-run fourth inning with an RBI up the middle, driving in Megan Dietrick (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mt. Lebanon).
  • Kristina DeMatteis (Boyers, Pa./Moniteau) kept things going with a hard crack back to the pitcher, scoring Taylor Wilp (Cincinnati, Ohio/Oak Hills) from third base.
  • Kaity Stocker (Tipp City, Ohio/Tippecanoe) made in 5-0 with a two-run rip to third base, scoring both Ingerick and DeMatteis on the hit.
  • In the fifth, Wilp added a run to Gannon's lead with an RBI double to center field, her second double of the day.
  • Dietrick busted an RBI double to center in the sixth, scoring Taliani from second base.
  • Ingerick ended the game when she scored Dietrick on an RBI hit to center.
 
GAME NOTES
  • Wilp went 3-for-3 with two doubles and an RBI. It was her sixth multiple-hit performance of the season. She has a team-high 12 doubles on the season.
  • Ingerick had two hits, two RBI and two runs. It was her team-high ninth multiple-hit and fifth multiple-RBI game of the year.
  • Taliani and Dietrick recorded two hits and an RBI apiece.  They both had a double as well.
  • Dietrick plated a season-high three runs in the win.
  • Stocker registered two RBI, her sixth multiple-RBI performance of the season.  
  • Gannon out-hit Mercyhurst, 13-4.
  • Mercyhurst committed one error.
  • Kennedy DeMatteis (Boyers, Pa./Moniteau) recorded a season-high seven strikeouts in her seventh win of the year. It was her third shutout of the year.
  • Tori Pierucci took the loss for the Lakers. She gave up five runs on eight hits in three innings.
  • Laura Gregory pitched 2.2 innings of relief for Mercyhurst, surrendering three runs.

  • Madi Beining (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny) fired a career-high nine strikeouts Saturday afternoon as the Gannon softball team picked up a doubleheader sweep of Mercyhurst with a 4-0 shutout at McConnell Family Stadium. 

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Gannon recorded all four of its runs in the opening inning.
  • Rachel Tanilli (Gibsonia, Pa./Deer Lakes) recorded a sacrifice fly out to left field, scoring Ingerick.
  • Lisa Szajn (Maple, Ontario/St. Joan of Arc Catholic) followed with a three-run home run to center field, her sixth homer of the year.
  • Gannon limited Mercyhurst to just five hits for the remainder of the game.
 
GAME NOTES
  • Szajn went 2-for-3 with a double and a three-run home run. She now has six homers on the season. It was her ninth mult-hit game of the year. 
  • Ingerick, Kr. DeMatteis and Wilp also had multi-hit games.
  • Ingerick and Kr. DeMatteis had two stolen bases.
  • Gannon out-hit Mercyhurst, 10-5.
  • Defensively, Beining pitched arguably the best game of her career, recording a career-best nine strikeouts while allowing just five hits. It was her third shutout of the year.  
  • Gregory took the loss for Mercyhurst. She gave up all four runs in the first inning before Pierucci came in for 5.1 innings of relief, striking out six.
 
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • Gannon shut out Mercyhurst three out of four times this season. The Lady Knights also had a 15-0 win at Mercyhurst on March 28. 
  • The Lady Knights have picked up six shutout wins this season.
  • Gannon recorded double-digit hits for the 13th time this year.
  • Ingerick is on an 11-game hitting streak.
  • The Lady Knights have had 14 games this season with at least one home run.
