Gannon Softball Splits Against Slippery Rock

 
GAME ONE: THE RUNDOWN
  • Final Score: Slippery Rock 7, Gannon 6
  • Records: SRU (13-19, 5-4 PSAC) | GU (15-11, 4-5 PSAC)
  • Location: SRU Softball Complex – Slippery Rock, Pa.

KEY SEQUENCE
  • The Gannon softball team surrendered four runs in the fifth inning, allowing Slippery Rock to rally for a 7-6 win in the opener Thursday afternoon at the SRU Softball Complex.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Gannon got out to a 1-0 lead in the second inning when Autumn Smith (Branchville, N.J./High Point Regional) scored on a Slippery Rock throwing error.
  • The Rock went up one run in the bottom of the inning when Becca Roesch scored Maggie Moore on an RBI single and Regan Hozak reached on a Gannon throwing error.
  • In the third, Maria Taliani (Cheswick, Pa./Deer Lakes) scored Kellyn Perich (Venetia, Pa./Peters Township) on an RBI double to left center. Lisa Szajn (Maple, Ontario/St. Joan of Arc Catholic) drove in Kaity Stocker (Tipp City, Ohio/Tippecanoe) with a single through the left side to make it 3-2.
  • Sarah Ingerick (Middlebury Center, Pa./Wellsboro Area) added to Gannon's lead in the fourth inning with a two-run home run to left center, her fourth of the year.
  • SRU rallied with four runs in the fifth. Caitlyn MacKelvey was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to start the comeback. Adeline Nicholson and Moore hit RBI singles to make it 5-5. Leah Vith drew a bases-loaded walk to give The Rock the lead for good at 6-5.
  • Slippery Rock added another run in the bottom of the sixth when Alexa Guglielmino scored on a wild pitch.
  • Rachel Tanilli (Gibsonia, Pa./Deer Lakes) cut the deficit to one in the seventh inning with a solo home run to left field.
 
GAME NOTES
  • Stocker and Szajn had two hits apiece.
  • Both teams tallied nine hits each.
  • Slippery Rock committed three errors while Gannon had two.
  • Kennedy DeMatteis (Boyers, Pa./Moniteau) took the loss in the circle. She pitched four innings, surrendering eight hits and six runs while striking out one.
  • Rebecca Tatone (Latrobe, Pa./Greater Latrobe) came in for two innings of relief, allowing just hit and one run. She also recorded one strikeout.

  • The Gannon softball team broke a 1-1 tie with four unearned runs on two home runs in the fifth inning, taking a 6-1 win from Slippery Rock and earning a split in PSAC West action Thursday afternoon. 
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Slippery Rock struck first in the bottom of the third when Nicholson scored Guglielmino with an RBI single to right field.
  • Tanilli smacked her second solo homer in as many games in the fourth inning to tie it up 1-1.
  • With two outs in the fifth, Stocker crushed a three-run home run to left field, her seventh homer of the year. Tanilli followed with her second solo home run of the game and third of the afternoon to give Gannon a 5-1 edge.
  • In the seventh, Gannon padded its lead when Kristina DeMatteis (Boyers, Pa./Moniteau) drove in Taylor Iavarone (Erie, Pa./McDowell) with an RBI hit to left field.
 
GAME NOTES
  • Tanilli went 3-for-3 with two home runs. It was the first multi-home run game of her career.
  • Autumn Smith (Branchville, N.J./High Point Regional) and Kr. DeMatteis also had multi-hit games.
  • Stocker had her fifth multi-RBI game of the year, while Tanilli had her third.
  • Gannon out-hit Slippery Rock, 10-5.
  • Both teams had one error apiece.
  • Madi Beining (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny) earned her eighth win of the year. She had seven strikeouts and allowed just one run.
