KEY SEQUENCE
  • After Clarion tied the game up at one, Gannon answered back with three runs in the top of the third. Jared Beach (McDonald, Pa./Canon-McMillan) lined a double to center field, clearing the bases and lifting Gannon in front 4-1. It was all the support Cory Hegedus (Greensburg, Pa./Hempfield) needed, who allowed just one run in five innings on the mound.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Following a scoreless opening frame, Gannon plated the first run of the afternoon in the top of the second. Beach opened the second with a leadoff double that caromed off the center field wall. Beach moved to third on a groundout by Dominic Mori (Greensburg, Pa./Hempfield Area), and ultimately scored on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Trey Zeroski (Clinton, Pa. / West Allegheny).
  • Clarion answered with the game-tying run in the bottom of the second, the only blemish on the line of Hegedus on the afternoon. Gannon took control of the opening game in its next trip to the plate.
  • Ian Steighner (Chicora, Pa./Butler) opened the top of the third with a double, and walks to Nate Cardy (Franklin, Pa./Franklin) and Elijah Quiceno (Berryville, Va./Stonebridge) loaded the bases. Beach delivered with the bases loaded chance, cracking a three-run double to right to push Gannon ahead 4-1.
  • Hegedus was superb on the bump, firing three scoreless innings to finish off his outing before giving way to John Bender (Wilson, N.Y. / Wilson). Offensively, Gannon added extra runs in the fifth and sixth.
  • Ian Hess (Canonsburg, Pa. / Canon-McMillian ) laced a single through the left side, scoring Cardy, to push Gannon in front 6-1. Run-scoring singles from Justin Hamm (Pittsburgh, Pa. / North Allegheny) and Cardy highlighted the sixth and extended the GU advantage to 7-1.
  • Bender worked around two walks over the final two innings, holding Clarion without a hit and collecting a strikeout to finish up the game.

GAME NOTES
  • While game one was taking place, the league announced that Cardy was named the PSAC West Baseball Athlete of the Week.
  • Today's game was played after weather forced a postponement over the weekend. Originally slated for an 11:00 AM start time, first pitch was bumped to the afternoon due to field conditions.
  • Gannon notched its seventh straight win and pushes its mark in conference play to 7-0. The Golden Knights are the lone team with an unbeaten mark in league play in the PSAC.
  • Hegedus fired his first double-digit strikeout game of the season, and his lone run allowed came by way of a passed ball. It was all part of a gritty effort for Hegedus, who notched his second win of the season.
  • Steighner, Beach and Quiceno all picked up multiple hits in the first game of the day.

GAME TWO: THE RUNDOWN
  • Final Score: Clarion 8, Gannon 3
  • Records: Gannon (17-7, 7-1 PSAC) | Clarion (12-15, 3-5 PSAC)
  • Location: Kelly Automotive Park - Butler, Pa.

KEY SEQUENCE
  • While Clarion had several chances to pull away, including a bases loaded chance in the first, Gannon was able to stay within striking distance thanks to some sloppy play by the Golden Eagle defense. Clarion took control however in the bottom of the fifth when a three-run shot gave Clarion a 7-3 lead.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Gannon plated a run in the top of the first off a single from Quiceno to left that scored Steighner for a 1-0 lead.
  • Clarion sent eight batters to the plate in the home half of the first inning, and a pair of bases loaded walks put the Golden Eagles in front 2-1. Ben Visnesky came on in relief to get the final out of the bottom of the first, getting a strikeout to neutralize the Clarion threat.
  • GU posted the tying run in the top of the third following a single from Jared Beach (McDonald, Pa./Canon-McMillan) that was misplayed in right, allowing Brandon Wetherholt (Gibsonia, Pa./Mars Area) to cross home plate. Clarion grabbed the lead back in the bottom of the fourth on a double off Visnesky for a 3-2 edge.
  • Visnesky battled back in the fourth after the Golden Eagles plated two runs, escaping a one out bases loaded jam with a strikeout and popup.
  • Gannon worked runners on the corners in the top of the fifth with just one out, as Steighner (HBP) and Wetherholt (walk) reached base. Quiceno got a run back for the Maroon and Gold with a sacrifice fly to center, making the score 4-3.
  • Clarion blew the game open with a three-run home run to push the lead to 7-3 in the bottom of the fifth. Ryan Kalbfus (Penfield, N.Y./Penfield) came on to pinch hit and delivered with a base hit, but Gannon was unable to push any runs across in the sixth.

GAME NOTES
  • The NCBWA Atlantic Region Week Seven Poll was released during game two of the doubleheader, with Gannon holding down the eight spot in the rankings.
  • Eric Sapp (Deerfield, Ohio/Southeast) was lifted after just 0.2 innings, allowing two hits, two runs and two walks. Visnesky provided 3.1 innings of relief and allowed two runs with five strikeouts.
  • Matthew Yough (Chicora, Pa./Karns City) finished the game on the mound for GU, tossing the final two outs of the seventh.
  • Clarion pitcher Jeremy Frazler was strong on the mound, mixing pitches to stifle the Golden Knight offense. He finished with just one strikeout, but allowed one earned run and just two hits.
  • Gannon mustered five hits from five different players. Steighner scored a pair of runs for the Golden Knights.
  • The loss was the first in conference play and snapped a seven game winning streak for GU.
