KEY SEQUENCE
  • After storming out to a 5-0 lead to start the game, the Gannon Golden Knights scored at least one run in each of the last four innings to take the lead back from Wayne State and close out the trip to Florida with an 8-2 record in the Russ-Matt Invitational. Jared Beach (McDonald, Pa./Canon-McMillan) broke the 6-6 tie with a two-run blast in the seventh, and Gannon didn't trail again.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Nate Cardy (Franklin, Pa./Franklin) got Gannon on the board early with a two-run home run before Dominic Mori (Greensburg, Pa./Hempfield Area) pushed the lead to 3-0 with a single. Luke Callahan (Chardon, Ohio / Chardon ) concluded the big surge in the first inning with a two-RBI single to center as Gannon rolled to a 5-0 edge.
  • Wayne State was held in check over the first two frames as Eric Sapp (Deerfield, Ohio/Southeast) fired in two strikeouts and picked off a runner in that span. The Warriors answered with four runs in the bottom half of the third and one run in the fourth to rally and tie the score at 5-5.
  • Each team plated a run in the sixth, with Gannon pushing a runner home after Elijah Quiceno (Berryville, Va./Stonebridge) was plunked by a pitch with the bases loaded. Wayne State scored with a double to center to tie the game once again.
  • Beach delivered the timely home run in the seventh, scoring Justin Hamm (Pittsburgh, Pa. / North Allegheny) who reached on a walk. With Gannon ahead 8-6, the Golden Knights plated a single run in each of the final two innings to take a 10-6 lead. Ian Hess (Canonsburg, Pa. / Canon-McMillian ) cracked a run-scoring single in the eighth while Callahan grounded home the final run of the day in the ninth.
