KEY SEQUENCE
  • The visitors jumped ahead 5-0 with a three-run home run in the second inning before expanding that margin to 9-0 in the fifth. Gannon heated up offensively on a cold day, smacking five home runs to climb back to within one run in the eighth. The Eagles plated two more in the top half of the ninth, and that was enough to hold on in a back-and-forth nonconference clash.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Already ahead 2-0 in the second inning, Ashland stormed ahead even more with a three-run home run by Logan Stoldt. The visitors tacked on three more runs in the fourth for a 9-0 lead over the Golden Knights.
  • Gannon got back on track in the home half of the fifth inning. Dominic Mori (Greensburg, Pa./Hempfield Area) laced a one-out single and later scored on a home run from Ryan Kalbfus (Penfield, N.Y./Penfield) as Gannon trailed 9-2. Ian Steighner (Chicora, Pa./Butler) punched a single to left, putting a runner on for Nate Cardy (Franklin, Pa./Franklin), who rocketed one over the center field fence for the second two-run shot of the frame.
  • Benjamin Visnesky (West Mifflin, Pa. / West Mifflin Area ) fired an inning of scoreless relief in the top of the sixth, sending the Eagles down in order. Jared Beach (McDonald, Pa./Canon-McMillan) continued the home run derby in the sixth, with a solo shot down the left field line, slicing the Ashland lead to 9-5. In his next plate appearance, Beach hit his second homer of the day, this time a two-out solo blast to right field as Gannon trailed 9-6.
  • Justin Hamm (Pittsburgh, Pa. / North Allegheny) singled through the left side to bring up Dominic Mori (Greensburg, Pa./Hempfield Area), who cracked an 0-2 pitch out to center for the Golden Knights second homer of the inning.
  • Ashland posted two timely runs in the top of the ninth to surge ahead 11-9, quelling the momentum built by the Golden Knights offensive outburst. Ian Hess (Canonsburg, Pa. / Canon-McMillian ) singled home the final run of the game, plating Cardy on a 1-2 pitch in the bottom of the ninth.

GAME NOTES
  • Friday afternoon's game was the 2019 home opener for the Golden Knights.
  • Visnesky was stellar out of the bullpen for the Golden Knights with five innings of relief. He kept the Eagles off the board in three of five innings and struck out three. He entered the game for starter Jarod Morrison (Hamilton, Ohio/Hamilton).
  • With two home runs today, Beach is tied for second on the team with four this season. He became the second player on the team this season (Hess) to record four RBI in a contest.
  • Four different players hit a home run, accounting for eight of Gannon's nine runs this afternoon.
  • Gannon has hit 22 home runs in 14 games this season.
  • While cold and windy conditions gave way to a light drizzle as the game progressed, it didn't slow down either offense. Both sides combined for 25 hits in the game.
  • With 13 hits today, Gannon has posted 10 or more knocks in a game four times this season.
  • Matthew Yough (Chicora, Pa./Karns City) entered the game for the final two outs in the ninth
  • Justin Hamm (Pittsburgh, Pa. / North Allegheny) has recorded a hit in four straight contests while classmate Luke Callahan (Chardon, Ohio / Chardon ) has picked up a knock in three straight games.
