  • The Gannon University softball team struggled to get the bats going Friday afternoon as they ultimately fell to 22nd-ranked Augustana University, 11-0.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Augustana raced out to a 3-run lead in the first inning. The Vikings recorded four hits and had two batters hit by pitches in the opening frame.
  • The Vikings built on their lead in the next inning, adding another four hits and three runs to their advantage.
  • Augustana added another run in the third and four more in the sixth to secure the victory.
 
GAME NOTES
  • Gannon was out-hit by its greatest margin of the season, 18-2.
  • Maria Taliani (Cheswick, Pa./Deer Lakes) and Taylor Wilp (Cincinnati, Ohio/Oak Hills) recorded hits for the Lady Knights.
  • Each team committed one error apiece.
  • Kennedy DeMatteis (Boyers, Pa./Moniteau) was tagged with the loss after 1.2 innings in the circle.

  • With the bases loaded in the seventh inning, Maria Taliani (Cheswick, Pa./Deer Lakes) made a great snag at the wall in centerfield to preserve a 5-2 win for the Gannon University softball team over the University of Mary. Lisa Szajn (Maple, Ontario/St. Joan of Arc Catholic) crushed a 3-run homer in the fifth inning and Kaity Stocker (Tipp City, Ohio/Tippecanoe) went 4-for-4 at the plate in the win. Madi Beining (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny) also struck out a career-high eight batters to go the distance for her team.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The University of Mary scored an unearned run in the opening inning to take its only lead of the game.
  • Gannon tied it up in the top of the next inning when Stocker scored on Brieann Backes' wild pitch.
  • Both teams exchanged just one hit apiece over the next 2.5 innings until Szajn hit her second homer of the week to center, scoring Nicole Bush (Painesville, Ohio/Lake Catholic) and Sarah Ingerick (Middlebury Center, Pa./Wellsboro Area).
  • Rachel Tanilli (Gibsonia, Pa./Deer Lakes) scored on another wild pitch in the sixth inning to make it 5-1.
  • The Marauders did not go away quietly, as they recorded three hits and one run in the seventh inning. Taliani caught a deep bases-loaded bomb by Rachael Laetsch to secure the win.

  • Stocker led Gannon with a 4-for-4 performance at the plate.
