KEY SEQUENCE
  • Gannon ran into inclement weather and a locked in starting pitcher on Tuesday morning. Despite knocking nine hits, the Golden Knights were only able to push two runs across while Minnesota State plated four runs in the third inning.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Nate Cardy (Franklin, Pa./Franklin) put the Golden Knights on the board early with a sacrifice fly to right in the first inning, scoring Luke Callahan (Chardon, Ohio / Chardon ), who reached on a triple for a 1-0 lead.
  • Minnesota State put two guys on in the second but went down in order after that, but the Mavericks broke through in the next frame following a lengthy rain delay. MSU plated four runs to gain a 4-1 lead in the top of the third.
  • Gannon responded with its final run of the day on a solo homer from Cardy, trimming the deficit to 4-2.
  • MSU answered with a run in the next frame along with two more in the ninth for the 7-2 margin.

GAME NOTES
  • The game was delayed for approximately 2.5 hours in the second inning due to rain and the teams resumed play around 1:00 p.m.
  • Pitcher Jack Zigan went the distance for the Mavericks, tossing 9.0 innings with 10 striekouts and no walks.
  • Cardy mashed his second home run of the year. He leads the team with 13 hits after another multi-hit effort at the plate today.
  • Ty Phelps (Pomeroy, Ohio/Meigs) and Benjamin Visnesky (West Mifflin, Pa. / West Mifflin Area ) combined to go nine innings on the mound for Gannon.
  • Temperatures were considerably cooler today for the Golden Knights, who had played in 80+ degree weather in their first two doubleheaders of the Russ-Matt Invitational.
  • Brandon Wetherholt (Gibsonia, Pa./Mars Area) went 3-for-4 at the plate, one of two Golden Knights (Cardy) with multiple hits.
  • While Gannon had a few opportunities to push more runs across, the Golden Knights stranded five runners on base.
