Gannon Softball Goes 1-1 on Second Day of Spring Break

KEY SEQUENCE
  • Tied 3-3 heading into the final inning, the Gannon softball team strung together five runs to claim an 8-3 win against Trevecca Nazarene Monday afternoon at the Osceola Softball Complex in Clermont, Florida. Lisa Szajn (Maple, Ontario/St. Joan of Arc Catholic) recorded a team-high three hits, including a double and a two-run homer to lead the Lady Knights.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Gannon jumped out to a three-run lead in the first inning thanks to an RBI single by Kaity Stocker (Tipp City, Ohio/Tippecanoe) and a two-run double by Maria Taliani (Cheswick, Pa./Deer Lakes).
  • Trevecca Nazarene cut into Gannon's lead in the second inning with a sacrifice fly to right field.
  • The Trojans tied it up at 3-3 in the third when Megan Groves hit a two-run single to right field.
  • After three scoreless innings, Gannon recorded four hits and five runs in the seventh inning to seal the deal.
  • Taylor Wilp (Cincinnati, Ohio/Oak Hills) started the scoring when she drove Megan Dietrick (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mt. Lebanon) in from second on an RBI double. Kellyn Perich (Venetia, Pa./Peters Township) followed with an RBI double to centerfield, before scoring herself on a wild pitch to extend the lead to 6-3. Szajn capped the scoring when she crushed Gannon's first home run of the season, a two-run shot to right field.
 
GAME NOTES
  • Szajn went 3-for-4 with a double and a home run.
  • Perich, Stocker and Szajn recorded two runs.
  • Taliani and Szajn had two RBI apiece.
  • Trevecca Nazarene recorded nine hits while Gannon had eight.
  • Madi Beining (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny) picked up her first victory of the season in the circle after tossing a complete game.

  • Mercy College got out to a dominating lead in the second game and held on to cruise to a 6-1 win over the Gannon softball team Monday afternoon in Clermont, Florida.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Mercy opened up the game with two runs in the first inning, three more in the second and another in the third to take a commanding 6-0 lead.
  • In the sixth inning, Rachel Tanilli (Gibsonia, Pa./Deer Lakes) crushed a solo home run to left center for Gannon's only run of the game.
 
GAME NOTES
  • Perich and Sarah Ingerick (Middlebury Center, Pa./Wellsboro Area) led Gannon with two hits apiece, while Tanilli had a solo homer.
  • Gannon had nine hits while Mercy had eight.
  • Perich took the loss after surrendering six earned runs in 2.1 innings. She made one strikeout.
  • Kennedy DeMatteis (Boyers, Pa./Moniteau) pitched 3.2 innings of relief and struck out two.
