Baseball Sweeps Regional Opponent Wheeling Jesuit on Monday in Florida

KISSIMMEE, Fla. – The Gannon baseball team got right back to action on Monday morning in Florida, defeating regional opponent Wheeling Jesuit 6-1 in game one and following it up with a 6-0 triumph in game two.

In game one, Gannon pulled ahead with a four-run sixth inning to grab a 6-0 lead. Five different players collected a hit while Luke Callahan (Chardon, Ohio / Chardon ) led the way with 2 RBI. The Golden Knights also took advantage of three errors from the Cardinals and never trailed in the contest.

Eric Sapp (Deerfield, Ohio/Southeast) was impressive on the mound, tossing 6.0 innings with eight strikeouts and just on earned run. Matthew Yough (Chicora, Pa./Karns City) came on in relief and threw the final inning.

Gannon scored single runs in the second and fifth for a 2-0 lead, with Jared Beach (McDonald, Pa./Canon-McMillan) collecting an RBI knock in the top half of the second. Trey Zeroski (Clinton, Pa. / West Allegheny) started the big inning for Gannon in the sixth after a single to left plated Jorge Mejia (San Juan, Puerto Rico/Colegio San Jose) for a 3-0 lead before Callahan broke open the regional clash with a timely 2-RBI double to center as Gannon led 5-0. The Golden Knights plated their final run in the opening game with a groundout as Ian Steighner (Chicora, Pa./Butler) crossed the plate for a 6-0 lead.

Wheeling Jesuit got on the board wth an RBI single through the left side, but was stifled the rest of the way by the Gannon pitching staff.

Deven Judy (Belle Vernon, Pa./Belle Vernon Area) whirled a complete game, seven inning shutout in game two for the Golden Knights. He allowed just three hits and fanned 11 with no walks for his first victory of the season.

After two scoreless innings, Gannon found its offensive rhythm in the third, fourth and fifth innings. Nate Cardy (Franklin, Pa./Franklin) and Callahan collected multi-hit days at the plate while Steighner drove in two. Ian Hess (Canonsburg, Pa. / Canon-McMillian ) added a hit, RBI and two runs scored for Gannon, which moves to 6-1 on the young season.

Ian Hess (Canonsburg, Pa. / Canon-McMillian ) smacked his sixth home run of the year in the fifth to cap the scoring for Gannon, bringing his slugging percentage to an impressive 1.083 in seven games.

Gannon benefited off some sloppy play from the Cardinals, who committed four errors on the day and several balks on the mound. As a result, Gannon was able to build its lead with runs in the fourth and fifth following miscues from WJU.

Judy's superb effort on the mound produced just two flyouts as 19 outs in the game came via strikeout or groundout.
