KEY SEQUENCE
  • Deven Judy (Belle Vernon, Pa./Belle Vernon Area) settled in on the mound in a key moment, retiring eight consecutive batters over the course of the third through fifth innings, all on his way to a 13-strikeout complete game. Coupled with six runs in the bottom of the fourth inning for the Golden Knight offense, and Gannon rolled past Clarion for its fifth consecutive win with a 10-1 triumph in game one.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Clarion took an early 1-0 lead, and the Golden Eagles held on to the narrow edge until the Gannon bats came alive in the bottom of the fourth. Judy received some slick defense behind him, highlighted by some key plays in the first, ultimately limiting Clarion's offensive chances.
  • Ian Hess (Canonsburg, Pa. / Canon-McMillian ) opened the inning with a single to left and was brought home on a Jared Beach (McDonald, Pa./Canon-McMillan) home run as Gannon took a 2-1 lead. The Golden Knights scored four more runs in the frame, all with two outs, with Ian Steigner, Nate Cardy (Franklin, Pa./Franklin) and Justin Hamm (Pittsburgh, Pa. / North Allegheny) all scoring on error.
  • The Golden Knights added a pair of runs in the fifth and sixth inning. Trey Zeroski (Clinton, Pa. / West Allegheny) doubled home Dominic Mori (Greensburg, Pa./Hempfield Area) before Steighner singled home Zeroski in the bottom of the fifth as Gannon raced ahead 8-1.
  • Zeroski brought home another run in the next inning, singling home Beach after running out a groundball. The Golden Knights plated their final run of the first game when Zeroski crossed home on a single from Luke Callahan (Chardon, Ohio / Chardon ) for a 10-1 lead.
  • Judy, who fired 13 strikeouts on the mound, closed out the game by striking out the side to secure the win for Gannon.

GAME NOTES
  • Judy fired his second complete game of the season and improves his record to 3-0 in 2019. His previous complete game was against Wheeling Jesuit on March 14. The 13 strikeouts mark the second double-digit strikeout game of the season and most in a game during his Gannon tenure.
  • Beach helped spark the Gannon offense with a homer in the second, his seventh of the season, to put Gannon in front and give the Golden Knights a lead they would not relinquish.
  • Steighner posted four hits at the plate, becoming the second Golden Knight (Cardy) to do so this season.
  • Three of the Golden Knights run-scoring singles came with three balls in the count.
  • Steighner, Zeroski and Beach all had multiple RBI, part of a balanced offensive surge for Gannon. It was the first career multi-RBI game for Zeroski as a Golden Knight.
  • Cardy drew three walks at the plate in game one while also scoring a run.

KEY SEQUENCE
  • The Golden Knights gave Jarod Morrison (Hamilton, Ohio/Hamilton) all the run support he needed, jumping on the Golden Eagles with seven runs in the second and eight in the third to push the hosts in front comfortably. Once again, Beach kick-started the Golden Knights with a home run to score the opening run of the contest.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Morrison found a rhythm on the mound early while the Gannon offense laced balls all over the yard in the second, third and fourth innings, accounting for a 17-1 lead when the onslaught was finished.
  • Beach homered the right before Mori scored Hess with a double for a 2-0 Gannon lead. Two straight walks loaded the bases for Cardy, who launched a grand slam to right, blowing the game open as Gannon led 6-0. In the next at-bat, Elijah Quiceno (Berryville, Va./Stonebridge) lifted the first pitch out of the park for a 7-0 advantage.
  • After chasing the Golden Eagles starter, Gannon continued the offensive surge in the bottom of the third. Hess led off the frame with a walk and quickly moved up 90 feet on a wild pitch. Hamm lined a 1-2 pitch to right for a double, scoring Hess from second for a commanding 8-0 lead.
  • Zeroski, Steighner and Callahan all followed with singles, which helped Gannon extend the lead to 10-0 without an out in the frame. Cardy delivered once again with runners in scoring position, driving home two more after striking a double to the right center gap.
  • A Quiceno single scored another run and a flyout from Beach accounted for the first two outs. Hess capped the big inning with a homer, lifting Gannon ahead 15-0 through three innings.
  • Clarion got a run back in the fourth, but Gannon answered with two more in the bottom half of the inning for a 17-1 lead. With Morrison going the distance on the mound, each team began to empty the bench for the rest of the nightcap.

GAME NOTES
  • After getting deep into the Clarion bullpen in both games, Gannon proved itself as an offensive juggernaut, combining for 27 runs on Saturday. In total, the Golden Knights have racked up 66 runs in six conference games.
  • Cardy had the best offensive day in his Gannon career in game two, going a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate with eight RBI, one walk and two runs scored. Despite the big day, he had his 11-game hitting streak snapped in the first game.
  • Morrison went the distance on the mound, his second complete game of the 2019 season. The 10-strikeout performance helped Morrison push his record to 4-1 on the year.
  • Ten different Gannon players registered a hit in the game.
  • With four more home runs in game two, the Gannon offense has belted 34 this season in 22 games.
  • Quiceno (9) and Hamm (6) are the team leaders in current hitting streaks.
