Gannon Softball Ties PSAC Record with Eight Homers in 15-0 Win Against Mercyhurst

  • The Gannon softball team opened up the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) schedule Thursday afternoon with an 8-2 loss to cross-town rival Mercyhurst.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Lakers took a 2-0 lead in the opening inning on Jamie Ward's two-run homer to center field.
  • Mercyhurst hit another two-run bomb in the fourth inning on Natalie Graff's first homer of the year.
  • In the sixth inning, Autumn Smith (Branchville, N.J./High Point Regional) scored Rachel Tanilli (Gibsonia, Pa./Deer Lakes) and Lisa Szajn (Maple, Ontario/St. Joan of Arc Catholic) on a double to center field to cut it to 4-2.
  • The Lakers built on their lead in the sixth inning with four runs on five hits and an error.  
 
GAME NOTES
  • Smith led Gannon with two RBI.
  • Smith, Szajn, Tanilli, Ashley Bower (Middleport, N.Y./Royalton-Hartland) and Taylor Wilp (Cincinnati, Ohio/Oak Hills) had one hit apiece.
  • Mercyhurst out-hit Gannon, 13-5.
  • Gannon committed one error.
  • Madi Beining (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny) took the loss in the circle. She had three strikeouts.

  • The Gannon softball team tied the PSAC single-game record with eight home runs in a dominating 15-0 win over Mercyhurst Thursday afternoon, earning its first conference win of the year. Kaity Stocker (Tipp City, Ohio/Tippecanoe) was sensational at the plate, going 3-for-3 with three homers and five RBI.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Kristina DeMatteis (Boyers, Pa./Moniteau) opened the scoring onslaught in the first inning with a solo home run to left field.
  • Two batters later, Stocker cracked a two-run bomb to left field to make it 3-0.
  • Tanilli belted a two-run homer of her own to cap the first inning with an early 5-0 advantage for Gannon.
  • Szajn crushed her team-leading fifth homer of the season in the second inning with a three-run shot to left.
  • Stocker made it 9-0 the next at-bat with her second homer of the game.
  • In the third inning, Sarah Ingerick (Middlebury Center, Pa./Wellsboro Area) got in on the GU home run derby with a two-run blast to left field.
  • DeMatteis followed with her second solo homer of the day, giving Gannon a 12-0 lead.
  • In her third at-bat of the game, Stocker hit her third home run of the day, another two-run dinger to left field.
  • Nicole Bush (Painesville, Ohio/Lake Catholic) capped the Lady Knights' offensive ambush in the fourth inning with an RBI double to left center, scoring Morgan Nyman (Howard, Pa./Bald Eagle Area).
 
GAME NOTES
  • Stocker was 3-for-3 with three homers and a career-high five RBI.
  • Stocker (3), DeMatteis (2), Szajn, Tanilli, Ingerick all provided homers in the record-tying performance.
  • Ingerick, DeMatteis, Szajn, Kherrin Morgan (Hamilton, Ohio/Talawanda) and Megan Dietrick (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mt. Lebanon) all had two hits apiece.
  • Gannon out-hit Mercyhurst, 17-3.
  • Mercyhurst committed two errors.
  • Kennedy DeMatteis (Boyers, Pa./Moniteau) earned the win in the circle, her fifth of the year. She made three strikeouts.

  • Stocker had a three-home run game for the first time in her career. It's the second time in her career recording multiple homers in a single game. She also recorded two homers vs. Winston-Salem State on March 10, 2018.
  • Kr. DeMatteis had the second multi-home run game of her career. She also crushed two homers on April 28, 2018 at Slippery Rock.
  • Szajn is on a 10-game hit streak.
  • Taliani has reached base safely in eight straight games.
  • Game two is Gannon's first five-inning win of the year.
