  • The Gannon University softball team seized its third shutout of the season Tuesday afternoon in a 3-0 win against Notre Dame College at McConnell Family Stadium.  Autumn Smith (Branchville, N.J./High Point Regional) and Taylor Wilp (Cincinnati, Ohio/Oak Hills) recorded two hits apiece, while Madi Beining (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny) pitched a complete game victory.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • After reaching base on her first double of the year, Smith scored the opening run in the second inning on Wilp's deep double to left field.
  • In the third, Smith drove in Kaity Stocker (Tipp City, Ohio/Tippecanoe) on a bases-loaded hit up the middle to make it 2-0.
  • Megan Dietrick (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mt. Lebanon) gave Gannon a three-run advantage in the sixth inning on an infield single that scored Smith from second base.
 
GAME NOTES
  • Smith and Wilp led Gannon, each going 2-for-3 with one RBI each.
  • Smith accounted for two of Gannon's runs while Stocker scored one.
  • Stocker drew two walks.
  • Gannon out-hit NDC, 7-4.
  • Both teams committed one error apiece.
  • Beining fired her eighth complete game of the season as she improved to 5-3 on the year. She made one strikeout and allowed just four hits.

KEY SEQUENCE
  • Rachel Tanilli (Gibsonia, Pa./Deer Lakes) smacked a go-ahead two-run homer in the fourth inning to lead the Lady Knights to an 8-4 win Tuesday afternoon, sealing the deal for a two-game sweep of Notre Dame College. Wilp and Maria Taliani (Cheswick, Pa./Deer Lakes) also contributed two RBI apiece in Gannon's eighth straight victory.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Stocker put Gannon up 1-0 in the first inning when she scored Kristina DeMatteis (Boyers, Pa./Moniteau) from second base on an RBI hit down the left field line. Taliani drove in a pair the next at-bat with a hard hit to left, making it 3-0.
  • In the third inning, Notre Dame responded in a big way, scoring four runs to take a one-run lead on the Lady Knights.
  • After reaching base with a double to right center, Taliani was sent home on Tanilli's second home run of the season, giving Gannon a 5-4 edge.
  • Lisa Szajn (Maple, Ontario/St. Joan of Arc Catholic) cracked an RBI double to center field in the fifth inning, scoring DeMatteis, who also doubled to get on base.
  • In the sixth, Wilp put the game on ice with a two-run double to center, scoring Smith and Dietrick.
 
GAME NOTES
  • Taliani was 3-for-3 at the plate with two doubles and two RBI.
  • Wilp and Tanilli also recorded two RBI apiece.
  • DeMatteis plated two of Gannon's runs.
  • The Lady Knights out-hit the Falcons, 10-6.
  • Gannon committed just one error.
  • Kellyn Perich (Venetia, Pa./Peters Township) tossed 4.2 innings of relief en route to her second win of the year. She struck out one and allowed three hits.
  • Kennedy DeMatteis (Boyers, Pa./Moniteau) got the start in the circle, going 2.1 innings and surrendering four runs. She made one strikeout.
 
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • Szajn in on an eight-game hit streak, while Wilp has recorded a hit in each of the last six games.
  • Taliani recorded her third multiple-RBI performance of the season, while Wilp had her second.
  • Tuesday was the home opener for the Lady Knights.
  • For the seventh time this season, Gannon tallied double-digit hits.
  • Gannon also swept Notre Dame last season by scores of 13-1 and 5-3.
