KEY SEQUENCE
  • Jared Beach (McDonald, Pa./Canon-McMillan) and Nate Cardy (Franklin, Pa./Franklin) each smacked leadoff homers and Cory Hegedus (Greensburg, Pa./Hempfield) scattered six hits in a complete game effort on the mound as the Golden Knights pulled in front late to collect the series victory over Slippery Rock in game one.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • After a big offensive output on Saturday, the Gannon offense struggled in the early portions of the contest. Hegedus was up to the task on the mound, and allowed single runs in the first and third innings.
  • The Golden Knights broke out in the fifth as Beach cracked a 1-1 pitch out to right to trim the SRU lead in half at 2-1. Ian Steighner (Chicora, Pa./Butler) would tie the game at two with a run-scoring double down the left field line. Justin Hamm (Pittsburgh, Pa. / North Allegheny), who singled through the left side, scored on the play.
  • Cardy lifted the Golden Knights in front, 3-2, with a leadoff solo home run to left. Beach, who reached on a fielder's choice two batters later, would eventually score on a throwing error as Gannon led 4-2.
  • Gannon plated two more runs in the seventh, as pinch-hitter Trey Zeroski (Clinton, Pa. / West Allegheny) and Steighner each scored on wild pitches. SRU posted the final run on game one on a solo home run from Frankie Jezioro in the seventh inning.

GAMEDAY MEDIA CENTER
KEY SEQUENCE
  • Gannon got off to a quick start, jumping ahead to a 4-0 lead in the first inning. That offensive outburst would be enough as Eric Sapp (Deerfield, Ohio/Southeast) and Ty Phelps (Pomeroy, Ohio/Meigs) combined to stifle the Slippery Rock offense in game two, handing Gannon a four-game sweep to open conference play.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Gannon raced out of the gate to a quick 4-0 lead in the first inning, highlighted by a two-run home run by Elijah Quiceno (Berryville, Va./Stonebridge). SRU responded with a run in the bottom of the first, but Eric Sapp (Deerfield, Ohio/Southeast) fired two straight scoreless innings on the mound.
  • The Golden Knights posted another run in the second, as Quiceno stayed locked in with a single up the middle that scored Cardy for a 5-1 edge. GU worked the bases loaded in the fourth, as Cardy singled before Quiceno and Beach walked. Ian Hess (Canonsburg, Pa. / Canon-McMillian ) brought a run home after reaching on a fielder's choice, just one pitch after smacking one foul, as the Golden Knights extended the lead to 6-1.
  • Slippery Rock got a run back, scoring on a wild pitch in the bottom of the fourth. Hamm opened the fifth with a home run that soared over the left field fence for a 7-2 lead. Phelps entered the game in relief on the mound and cruised through the remainder of the ballgame.
