KEY SEQUENCE
  • Ryan Kalbfus (Penfield, N.Y./Penfield) opened his big day in the first game of the afternoon by kick-starting a four-run second inning for the Golden Knights, who tacked on six more runs in the contest, as Gannon rolled to an 11-6 victory to open conference play. Coupled with six strong innings of work on the mound from Deven Judy (Belle Vernon, Pa./Belle Vernon Area), Gannon smacked nine hits and withstood a few late defensive lapses in the win.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Ian Steighner (Chicora, Pa./Butler) reached base on an error to lead off the bottom of the first, and Elijah Quiceno (Berryville, Va./Stonebridge) made good on the Slippery Rock miscue by driving in Steighner with a single for a 1-0 lead.
  • The Rock answered with two runs in the top of the second, but Gannon countered that with four runs of its own in the home half of the frame. Kalbfus scored two with a single down the line, plating Jared Beach (McDonald, Pa./Canon-McMillan) and Dominic Mori (Greensburg, Pa./Hempfield Area), while Luke Callahan (Chardon, Ohio / Chardon ) capped the scoring in the frame with a double to center that brought home Steighner.
  • Slippery Rock scored a run in the top of the third to trim its deficit to 5-3, but the Golden Knights scored three runs in the fourth and fifth innings to take a comfortable lead. Meanwhile, Judy fired two scoreless frames on the mound in that span to help Gannon continue expanding the lead.
  • Doubles from Justin Hamm (Pittsburgh, Pa. / North Allegheny) and Kalbfus plated the three runs in the fifth as Gannon surged ahead 11-3. Slippery Rock scored the final three runs of the day, but pitchers John Bender (Wilson, N.Y. / Wilson) and Matthew Yough (Chicora, Pa./Karns City) combined to close out the seventh inning for the Maroon and Gold.

KEY SEQUENCE
  • Slippery Rock snagged the lead in the top of the fourth, but it was short-lived as Gannon scored six runs in the bottom half of the frame to take back the lead for good. Doubles from Hamm and Nate Cardy (Franklin, Pa./Franklin) scored runs, and the opportunistic Golden Knights turned it into a big inning thanks to some errors by The Rock.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Steighner opened the scoring with a ground-rule double that scored Mori for a 1-0 lead in the second. Slippery Rock took the lead in the third with a home run off the bat of Joe Campagna before Cardy tied the game with a solo shot of his own in the bottom of the third.
  • Kalbfus delivered again with runners in scoring position, slicing a double that stayed just fair inside the left field line to plate Beach and Mori for a 4-2 GU lead. Another home run for Slippery Rock shifted momentum back in favor of the visitors, as SRU grabbed a 5-4 lead.
  • Run-scoring doubles from Hamm and Cardy pushed Gannon back in front, 6-5, and the Golden Knights scored four more runs off various errors from SRU to take a commanding 10-5 lead.
  • Quiceno blew the game open with a grand slam in the sixth for a 15-7 edge, and the Golden knights held on for the sweep after Slippery Rock plated two runs in the seventh.
  • Jarod Morrison (Hamilton, Ohio/Hamilton) tossed six innings and gave way to Yough, who finished out the contest by collecting outs on three of the final five SRU batters in the visitor half of the seventh.
