KEY SEQUENCE
  • Shippensburg took advantage of solid possession early in the game to jump out to a 6-0 lead in the first eight minutes. Gannon bounced back with the next two goals and played even with the Raiders for much of the final 50 minutes, but the early deficit was a bit too much to overcome in in frigid conditions in Saturday's PSAC opener.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Ship commanded draw controls early in the game and kept Gannon out of its offensive zone for the first eight-plus minutes of the game. Three free position goals and some slick passing let the guests build a 6-0 lead on the Lady Knights by the 22:02 mark of the first half.
  • Once Gannon got its first successful clear, it didn't take long to capitalize, as Erin Rotondo (Manalapan, N.J./Manalapan) charged inside the arc to get the hosts on the board at the 18:32 mark. Less than two minutes later, Rachel Tufts (Erie, Pa./McDowell) used the same type of attack to beat the defense and make it 6-2. Kayla Shields (Baltimore, Md./Perry Hall) added another unassisted goal with 14:33 on the clock to bring the Knights within 7-3.
  • After a long sequence without a score and with just five total shots, Ship got a key goal with 7:49 left in the half to bump its lead to 8-3. That started to quicken the pace, as Tufts notched her second of the game on the ensuing possession before the Raiders added two more to make it 10-4 all within the next two minutes. A save from Erin Renwick (Islip, N.Y./Islip) as the clock neared a minute started the ball the other way, and Tufts scored on a free position to cut it to 10-5 at the break.
  • Ship won the first two draws of the second half and took advantage quickly to build a 12-5 margin less than a minute in. Gannon scored just as fast, as Shields won the next draw and Alexa Bower (Rochester, N.Y./Brighton) followed with a nice move to beat a defender and get it back to 12-6. The two teams traded goals over the next couple minutes, but the Raiders netted the next two to go up 15-7 with 20:09 to play.
  • Tufts scored off a free position and Rotondo dished to Bower for to make it two goals in 45 seconds, but Shippensburg got two finishes in two minutes from Madi Newman to keep Gannon at bay.
  • Shields kicked off a strong finish for the Knights by taking advantage of a free position following a Ship card. That started a run of four of the final five goals of the game for Gannon, as Rotondo slipped through the defense for a pair of unassisted tallies. Shields beat the clock for the final finish of the game, getting a pass from Tufts across the attack area on a restart to set the final score.

GAME NOTES
  • Tufts led the Lady Knights with five goals on the day. That's a new season-high for the freshman, who scored on five of her six shots and has put up three, two, three and five goals in her first four collegiate games.
  • Renwick made 14 saves while facing 42 total shots on the day. The sophomore also turned in a career-high seven groundballs.
  • Despite earning extra attention from the defense, Rotondo finished with three goals to record her 10th straight multi-goal game. The junior has scored at least twice in 17 out of her last 18 games, and with 74 career goals, she's three away from breaking into the top 25 in program history.

UP NEXT
  • Gannon closes a three-game homestand in Erie on Tuesday evening, hosting Lake Erie in its final nonconference game of the season.
  • The 7 p.m. first draw from McConnell Family Stadium will feature live video and live stats.
  • The Lady Knights are 5-1 all-time against the Storm.
  • Lake Erie, the defending Great Midwest conference champion, is 2-2 this season, with a Sunday matchup against Wheeling Jesuit on Sunday.
