KEY SEQUENCE
  • For the second consecutive game, Ashland got on the board first and maintained control throughout the contest. The Eagles plated a pair of runs in the first and third innings for a 4-0 lead. When Gannon answered with a run in the fourth, the Eagles struck back in the home half of the frame with two more runs, pushing the Ashland lead to 6-1.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Ashland opened up a 2-0 lead in its first trip to the plate, ultimately notching two more runs in the third inning. Elijah Quiceno (Berryville, Va./Stonebridge) hit a one-out double to right center and raced home on a single from Ian Hess (Canonsburg, Pa. / Canon-McMillian ) as Gannon trailed 4-1.
  • The Eagles answered back with two runs in the bottom of the fourth, and after a scoreless fifth Gannon brought home a run in the sixth. After consecutive singles from Nate Cardy (Franklin, Pa./Franklin) and Elijah Quiceno (Berryville, Va./Stonebridge), Ian Hess (Canonsburg, Pa. / Canon-McMillian ) trimmed the GU deficit to 6-2 after reaching on a fielder's choice.
  • Ashland built its leader even further with two more runs in the sixth. Gannon plated a run in the seventh, but it wasn't enough after being faced with an early deficit.

KEY SEQUENCE
  • After scoring a run to extend the game in the top of the seventh, Gannon could not close the deal as Ashland walked off in the bottom of the frame for a narrow 3-2 win in the nightcap.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Cory Hegedus (Greensburg, Pa./Hempfield) and Perry Bewley battled it out on the mound as each team plated just one run through five innings. Ashland opened up a 1-0 edge with a run in the second, but Gannon tied the score when Wetherholt singled home Hess in the fourth.
  • The Eagles took a 2-1 lead with a sacrifice fly in the sixth, coming right after Hegedus was lifted in favor of John Bender (Wilson, N.Y. / Wilson) on the mound. The Golden Knights extended the game in the top of the seventh with Quiceno doubling home Luke Callahan (Chardon, Ohio / Chardon ) to tie the game at two.
  • Ashland eventually loaded the bases and grabbed the walk-off win in the bottom of the seventh.

GAME NOTES
  • Four different players notched a hit in game one for Gannon and Quiceno was the lone player with multiple hits.
  • Eric Sapp (Deerfield, Ohio/Southeast) and Deven Judy (Belle Vernon, Pa./Belle Vernon Area) combined to finish the game on the mound for the Golden Knights.
  • Chance Hitchcock tossed a complete game for Ashland and struck out five.
  • Hess and Quiceno led the Golden Knights this week, each posting five hits and a .455 batting average against Ashland (three games).
  • Despite striking out just one, Hegedus was strong for Gannon with 5.1 innings of work.
  • Callahan, Hess and Jared Beach (McDonald, Pa./Canon-McMillan) paced the Golden Knights with two knocks each in game two.
  • The Golden Knights had an 8-4 edge in hits in game two but committed two errors.
  • Hess continued his hitting streak, recording one in each of the past four games.

  • Gannon returns home on Friday, March 22 to open up conference play with a doubleheader against Slippery Rock.
