KEY SEQUENCE
  • Wheeling Jesuit made a late charge to get back in the game after being down four with 11:25 to play, getting to within a goal at 15-14 with 2:20 to go. That's when Kayla Shields (Baltimore, Md./Perry Hall) got the ball at the top of the arc, dodged a defender and beat two more in front of the goal to get just enough space to slip in what would be the game-winning goal with just 80 seconds left. That wound up being key, as the Cardinals got to within one with seven seconds to go.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Wheeling Jesuit got on the board first in the opening minute, but the Lady Knights began putting the pressure on. Erin Rotondo (Manalapan, N.J./Manalapan) tied it, then Caroline Mauck (Martinsville, Ind./Mooresville) gave the hosts the lead off a feed from Shields, and they would not trail the rest of the way. It wound up being five straight scores for Gannon, as Jessica Hudak (Pittsburgh, Pa./Seton-LaSalle), Shields and Rachel Tufts (Erie, Pa./McDowell) pushed it ahead 5-1 midway through the half.
  • Shields and WJU's Mackenzie Kaderabek traded goals to keep it at a four-goal lead within the next few minutes, and the scoring halted until Kaderabek added another with 55 seconds to go to end a low-scoring half with a 6-3 Gannon advantage.
  • Two scores for the Cardinals in the first three minutes of the second half got a much more fast-paced period underway. Gannon responded with two quick ones of its own from Rotondo and Shields to bump it back to 8-5, but three straight in less than two minutes from Kaderabek allowed Wheeling Jesuit to tie it up for the first time since early in the first half.
  • Rotondo drove to the net to put the Knights back up just 23 seconds later, and had a slick dish to Mauck to make it 10-8 at the 15:53 mark. Tufts and Hudak added two more to give Gannon a comfortable four-goal spread over the next four minutes, but the Cardinals scored four of the next six to get back within two at 14-12 with 6:03 to play.
  • Rotondo scored on a free position from the left side right after Gannon went on the advantage with 5:30 to play to notch a crucial 15-12 lead, but Kaderabek kept scoring, netting back-to-back goals to get it back to one before Shields' clutch finish in the final two minutes that helped seal the win.

GAME NOTES
  • The Lady Knights got balanced scoring as they picked up their second win in three games this season, as Rotondo and Shields each notched four goals and Mauck and Tufts added three apiece. Mauck's came on four shots, and the senior added two assists.
  • Shields picked up her four goals on just six shots, and set a new career-best with four goals and five points.
  • Erin Renwick (Islip, N.Y./Islip) stopped a season-high nine shots.
  • The Knights posted 39 shots, putting 32 on goal. Both numbers were the most for the team since putting up 46 shots and 34 on goal against Lake Erie in 2015.
  • Gannon moves to 3-0 all-time against Wheeling Jesuit.

UP NEXT
  • Gannon continues a three-game homestand in Erie this Saturday, hosting Shippensburg in its PSAC opener Saturday morning.

  • The Lady Knights are 12-2-1 all-time against the Raiders.
  • Ship is 2-2 in the early part of the season after suffering an 18-4 defeat against No. 22 New York Tech Wednesday.
