KEY SEQUENCE
  • Four solo home runs fueled the Gannon offense, with shots from Luke Callahan (Chardon, Ohio / Chardon ) and Nate Cardy (Franklin, Pa./Franklin) putting the Golden Knights in front 2-0. Glenville State eventually battled back to tie the game at two in the bottom of ninth, but Gannon responded with two more solo shots in the top of the 12th, coming from Elijah Quiceno (Berryville, Va./Stonebridge) and Ian Hess (Canonsburg, Pa. / Canon-McMillian ) to pull ahead 4-2.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Cory Hegedus (Greensburg, Pa./Hempfield) got into an early groove, working efficiently on the mound before dealing with some traffic on the base-paths later on in his outing. Hegedus kept the Pioneers off the scoreboard, pitching five full innings while allowing four hits with a career-high seven strikeouts.
  • Luke Callahan (Chardon, Ohio / Chardon ) broke the scoreless tie with a home run to right field, accounting for the first hit of the game for the Golden Knights as Gannon led 1-0 in the fourth inning.
  • Deven Judy (Belle Vernon, Pa./Belle Vernon Area) came on in relief of Hegedus in the bottom of the sixth inning, delivering three strong innings. He yielded just one earned run and fanned six.
  • Cardy doubled the Golden Knights lead, cracking a home run to deep left field for a 2-0 advantage. GSC rallied back with single runs in the eighth and ninth to tie the season-opening contest at two and send the game into extra innings.
  • The Golden Knights called on senior hurler Matthew Yough (Chicora, Pa./Karns City), and he answered in a big way with three clutch innings of scoreless relief which included some high-leverage situations.
  • Gannon provided all the offense in extra innings, pulling ahead for good with a game-winning drive from Quiceno to left. Hess added insurance with the second of a back-to-back blast in the bottom of the 12th.
  • Yough shut the door in the bottom of the 12th, getting a flyout and two groundouts to end the contest.

GAME NOTES
  • Cardy tied the all-time Gannon mark for career home runs with 18 and became the school's all-time leader in career RBI with 122.
  • Callahan recorded the first hit and home run of his career while recording the first hit and run of the season for the Golden Knights all in the same swing.
  • The Golden Knights featured several freshmen in the starting lineup, including Callahan, Brandon Wetherholt (Gibsonia, Pa./Mars Area) and Trey Zeroski (Clinton, Pa. / West Allegheny), taking the field for their first collegiate action.
  • Glenville State had a potential game-winner go just foul down the right field line. After a conference and deliberation among the umpires, the ball was called foul and Judy notched a strikeout on the very next pitch to extend the game into extra innings.
  • Yough earned the victory for the Golden Knights, and was part of a collective 16-strikeout effort from the Gannon pitching staff.

KEY SEQUENCE
  • Hess continued a stellar start to his college career with two more home runs, the second of which pulled Gannon in front comfortably in the ninth inning as the Golden Knights cruised to a victory in the nightcap.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Gannon continued its home run derby on Friday in the first inning as Ian Steighner (Chicora, Pa./Butler) smacked a homer to left as Gannon led 1-0 early. Neither team found the scoreboard until Northwood tallied two runs in the bottom of the third to take a 2-1 lead.
  • Steighner stayed locked in at the plate, punching a single to right field that scored Dominic Mori (Greensburg, Pa./Hempfield Area) to tie the nightcap up at two in the top of the fourth. In the fifth, Quiceno cracked a one-out double to left, ultimately advancing to third on a wild pitch. Mori brought Quiceno home with an RBI-double to center for a 3-2 Gannon advantage.
  • Northwood tied the game up in the bottom of the fifth as McClellan drove home a run with a single to left.
  • Hess lined up his second homer of the season in the top of the seventh inning as the freshman connected on a two-run blast, scoring Cardy, to push Gannon ahead 5-3.
  • The Golden Knights blew the game open in the ninth, with Cardy scoring on a passed ball before Hess smacked his second home run of the game with a two-run blast to left as Gannon led 8-3.
  • Eric Sapp (Deerfield, Ohio/Southeast) was superb in relief, whirling four innings of scoreless ball. He didn't allow a hit and struck out six.

GAME NOTES
  • Steighner became the fifth different player in just two games to hit a home run for the Golden Knights this season.
  • Jarod Morrison (Hamilton, Ohio/Hamilton) made the start on the mound for Gannon and kept Northwood off the scoreboard in three out of his five innings of work. He tossed 59% of his pitches for strikes and finished his outing with six strikeouts.
  • Northwood entered the matchup with Gannon as the nation's leader in home runs/game (2.67) among NCAA DII schools. However, it was Gannon that went deep twice as part of a seven home run day across two games.
  • Hess was one of four Gannon players (Steighner, Cardy and Quiceno) with multiple hits in the contest.
  • Gannon mashed seven home runs in its first two games of the season after hitting 31 in 49 games last season. With stats through Thursday's games in the NCAA database, the Knights would vault to first in the nation with 3.5 home runs per game, passing Northwood's 2.67 entering Friday.
