KEY SEQUENCE
  • Northwood put together a four-run fifth inning to overtake Gannon, 10-7, in West Virginia on Saturday afternoon. The Timberwolves loaded the bases with a pair of walks and a batter being hit by a pitch, before a single scored two runs. With just one out in the frame, another single plated two more as Northwood led 5-4.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • After a leadoff double for Northwood, Gannon was able to escape the inning with no damage. In the bottom of the frame, Ian Steighner (Chicora, Pa./Butler) was hit by a pitch and Nate Cardy (Franklin, Pa./Franklin) singles to left to put runners on first and second. Elijah Quiceno (Berryville, Va./Stonebridge) took advantage of that traffic on the bases, cracking a three-run home run to left field as Gannon led 3-0 in the early going.
  • The Gannon offense would evaporate beyond the Quiceno home run in the middle innings, with the Golden Knights scoring just one more run in the fourth inning. Recording just one hit in the frame, Luke Callahan (Chardon, Ohio / Chardon ) punched a single to center which allowed Dominic Mori (Greensburg, Pa./Hempfield Area) to advance to second. A groundout moved both runners up 90 feet and Mori raced home on a passed ball to hand Gannon a 4-1 lead.
  • Northwood regained the momentum in the fifth inning with four runs to take a 5-4 lead. The Timberwolves also posted a pair of runs in both the sixth and seventh innings for a 9-4 cushion.
  • Ian Hess (Canonsburg, Pa. / Canon-McMillian ) in the bottom of the eighth, a two-run blast that scored Nate Cardy (Franklin, Pa./Franklin), which pulled Gannon to within 10-6.
  • Ryan Kalbfus (Penfield, N.Y./Penfield) lifted one over the wall in center for the third home run of the game for Gannon, trimming the deficit to 10-7.

GAME NOTES
  • Gannon posted a season-high 10 hits in the loss.
  • Quiceno smacked his second home run of the season before Hess launched one in the eighth. It was the ninth home run of the season for Gannon in just the team's third game. Kalbfus added a solo shot to center, accounting for the golden Knights' tenth homer of the 2019 season.
  • Ty Phelps (Pomeroy, Ohio/Meigs) made the start on the mound for Gannon against Northwood. He allowed just four hits but was forced to work into some deep counts and walked five.
  • Phelps was one of six Golden Knight pitchers to see the mound today, with no others going beyond 1.2 innings.
  • Northwood took advantage of its opportunities to score, hitting .360 (9-of-25) with runners on base and .333 (6-of-18) with runners in scoring position.
  • The Golden Knights were outscored 7-0 over the course of the fifth, sixth and seventh innings.
