KEY SEQUENCE
  • California (Pa.) started the game with an aggressive full court press which gave Gannon fits in the opening moments of the contest. The Vulcans made good on that early pressure, jumping out to a 16-0 lead to begin the conference clash.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Powered by a smothering full court press and unrelenting defensive intensity, California (Pa.) raced out to an 8-0 lead, prompting a Gannon timeout from Jim Brunelli just 1:42 into the game. The Vulcans doubled that lead, taking advantage of Gannon turnovers to surge ahead 16-0 before Nicole LaCava (Hermitage, Pa./Hickory) got the Lady Knights on the board with her first three-pointer of the season.
  • Chelsea Rourke (Gibsonia, Pa./Pine-Richland) drove down the left block, drawing contact and converting the layup the next time down the court for Gannon, but the Vulcans kept the Lady Knights off the scoreboard for the remainder of the opening frame.
  • Sydney Mitchell (Halethorpe, Md./Seton Keough) opened the second quarter with a three, bringing Gannon to within 26-8. Tori Obenrader (Fryburg, Pa./North Clarion) followed up a missed three from Boston McKinney (Bolivar, Ohio/Tuscarawas Valley) as Gannon trailed 38-13, but the Lady Knights scored just one more basket in the half. Lauren Tewes (Waterford, Mich./Waterford Kettering) took a pass from Aiora Rivas (Ibiza, Spain/IES CTEIB) and tossed up a desperation heave that banked in as the first half expired, sending Gannon into the locker room trailing 47-16 at intermission.
  • LaCava began to heat up, scoring eight points in the third quarter for Gannon as the Lady Knights tied the Vulcans with 16 points each in the third frame. Ivana Twumasi (Jane and Finch, Ontario/Central Tech) had an aggressive take near the end of the frame, drawing a foul and converting one of two at the line as Gannon trailed 63-32 heading into the fourth quarter.
  • With the game well out of reach in the fourth quarter, Mitchell scored the Lady Knights first basket that didn't come at the foul line with 2:57 remaining in the game. She finished the three-point play, converting the foul shot before Twumasi converted a three-point play with two minutes left in the game.

GAME NOTES
  • Despite the large margin of the final score, Gannon was only outscored 32-29 in the second half.
  • LaCava got back into double figures with 11 points on an efficient 3-of-4 shooting. Overall, LaCava has scored 10 or more points in 20 games this season.
  • Twumasi set a new career-high with eight points after going 6-of-9 from the foul line.
  • California's Seairra Barrett tied the Gannon scoring output with 16 points in the first half. She poured in a game-high 33 points along with 13 rebounds.
  • One of the top teams in the league in steals, California took the ball away 20 times from the Lady Knights.
  • Gannon committed 19 turnovers in the opening half and finished with a season-high 33 turnovers. The Vulcans cashed in, notching 41 points off turnovers in the game.
