KEY SEQUENCE
  • Gannon posted a pair of runs in the third quarter to twice trim a double-digit deficit to just four points. Edinboro never countered with a game-breaking run of its own, but managed to close the third quarter with a 3-pointer and hit the first two baskets of the fourth to go up by 11. That combined with a harassing defense that held the Lady Knights without a field goal until the 6:14 mark allowed the Fighting Scots to escape with the win.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • After the two teams combined to miss their first six shots of the game, Tori Obenrader (Fryburg, Pa./North Clarion) took the lid off the basket with a bucket through a foul, and converted the three-point play. Edinboro followed with a 3-pointer to tie it, but Sydney Mitchell (Halethorpe, Md./Seton Keough) shot right back, nailing a 3 of her own from the right wing. The Fighting Scots got it back within a point, but Obenrader capped an 8-0 run with a trey from the top of the arc to push the lead to 16-7 at the 3:32 mark.
  • Michaela Barnes and Ciara Rosten got to work for Edinboro to let them creep back in it, but Boston McKinney (Bolivar, Ohio/Tuscarawas Valley) found Chelsea Rourke (Gibsonia, Pa./Pine-Richland) with a long pass, and Rourke finished before the buzzer to give the Lady Knights a 23-15 lead after one period. After each team managed just a pair of free throws in the first two minutes of the second quarter, back-to-back jumpers from the Scots got the offense going, and turnovers started to hurt Gannon, which saw the guests go on a 9-2 run to get within 27-26 at the second-quarter media timeout.
  • Edinboro took its first lead of the game on a Jontay Walton 3-pointer coming out of the timeout, and a fastbreak bucket pushed the lead out to 31-27 with less than 90 seconds to go in the half. Nicola LaCava got things going with a block on the defense end, getting the ball up to Mitchell in transition the other way to help the Knights get it to 33-31 at the break.
  • After the first two quarters went by without a field goal in the first two minutes, Edinboro came out on fire, hitting 3-pointers on its first two possessions  and adding a layup to push out to a 10-point advantage. Obenrader answered with six straight points by herself to keep the game from getting away, finishing off a three-point play before hitting a 3-pointer to slice it to a four-point game at the 6:12 mark.
  • Edinboro again appeared poised to pull away after a 9-0 run midway through the third, but Hale Tewes hit a trey from the top of the key, and Ivana Twumasi (Jane and Finch, Ontario/Central Tech) followed with one from the corner to start a 10-0 burst for the Lady Knights that included free throws from both LaCava and Lauren Tewes (Waterford, Mich./Waterford Kettering). That made it a four-point game once again, with the Scots hitting a 3-pointer in the final seconds to make it 55-48 at the end of the frame.
  • Rourke got the first Gannon basket of the fourth, but it took nearly four minutes to get it. McKinney added the second basket of the quarter, getting it to a 10-point margin at 63-53 with 4:37 to play. A 3-pointer from Mitchell and two Obenrader free throws as the clock reached a minute to play got it to seven, but Monica Brown got a fastbreak layup to fall after spinning around the rim, and the Scots closed out a perfect night at the line to seal the victory.

GAME NOTES
  • Obenrader recorded the third double-double of her young career, and did it in a big way, posting career highs with both 20 points and 17 rebounds. Her 17 boards is the most for a Lady Knight since Jennie Thies pulled in 18 against California on Feb. 17, 2016.
  • The freshman was one of four Knights in double figures in scoring, the fifth time this season Gannon has pushed at least four players to double digits. Rourke added 13 points to go with three assists and two blocks.
  • Gannon matched a season-high with seven blocks in the game, a mark it also hit Jan. 21 against Clarion. LaCava notched a season-high four rejections, the first Knight to block four shots in a game this season other than Rourke, who's done so three times.
  • In a game that had a final margin of 13 points, Edinboro was a perfect 16-of-16 from the free throw line. It was the first time that a Gannon opponent was 100 percent from the charity stripe since California also went 16-of-16 on Feb. 8, 2017.
  • The win clinched a spot in the PSAC postseason for Edinboro, which is currently sitting in third place in the West. While the defeat keeps Gannon in seventh place, the three teams ahead of the Knights all lost as well, keeping Gannon just a game out of the postseason picture.

UP NEXT
  • Gannon will take Wednesday off before closing out its home slate next Saturday against crosstown rival Mercyhurst.
  • The 5:30 p.m. tip from the Hammermill Center will feature live video, live stats and live audio.
  • The primetime games are also senior night for both basketball teams, and the second Porreco Pride of Erie game of the season.
