A 48 Point Second Half Powered the Knights to Their Third Straight Win

The Short Story: The Knights won their third straight to sit second in PSAC West standings as they head into the holiday break. Gannon poured in 48 points in the second half led by Tori Obenrader (Fryburg, Pa./North Clarion) who scored 13 in the last 20 minutes. Sam Pirosko (Eastlake, Ohio/Eastlake North) came off the bench and added nine points. Obenrader finished the game with 15 points and nine boards.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Saturday's game got off to a slow start for both teams. Bloomsburg took a 2-0 lead a minute into the game with a layup from Emma Saxton. Chelsea Rourke (Gibsonia, Pa./Pine-Richland) tied the game at the 5:23 mark on a pair of free throws, while Haley Tewes (Waterford, Mich./Waterford Kettering) hit Gannon's first field goal almost a minute later to give the Knights a 4-2 edge. The first quarter saw two more lead changes and one tie, but a three-pointer from Emily Poling (Defiance, Ohio/Defiance) and a layup from Daria-Hanna Koul (Minsk, Belarus/J. Addison) gave the Knights a 9-8 edge at the end of one.

The Huskies found their groove in the second quarter outscoring the Knights 21-13. The quarter saw five ties making for a competitive 10 minutes. McKenna Howard tied the game 18-18 on a layup paving the way for Bloomsburg's first lead of the second quarter. Meghan Corridoni hit a jumper with four minutes left to play giving the Huskies a two point edge. Koul found her way into the paint for a layup at th 3:18 mark to tie the game for the final time in the second, but the Huskies closed the quarter with a 7-0 run to lead 29-22 at the half.

Obenrader carried Gannon in the third quarter scoring eight points as the Knights put up 23 in the third. She scored on the opening possession, while Tewes knocked down a pair of free throws on the next possession to bring the Knights within three. A layup from Obenrader at the 1:55 mark gave Gannon its first lead in the second half and sparked a 6-3 run. The Knights led 45-42 at the end of the third.

The Knights pulled away in the fourth quarter to win their third straight. Sydney Mitchell (Baltimore, Md./Seton Keough) scored five straight points for Gannon to start the quarter and give Gannon a 50-44 edge. The Huskies stuck with the Knights until the 1:53 mark. Obenrader hit a jumper to keep Gannon's lead at six points. The Knights scored their final 11 points from the foul line helping them pull away for the 70-56 win. 

GAME NOTES
  • Knights used success from the foul line to help defeat the Huskies on their own court. They made 20-of-23 attempts including 11-of-12 in the final two minutes of action.
  • Five players finished perfect from the line. Tewes, Boston McKinney (Bolivar, Ohio/Tuscarawas Valley), and Emily Poling (Defiance, Ohio/Defiance) finished 4-for-4, while Chelsea Rourke (Gibsonia, Pa./Pine-Richland) knocked down both of her attempts. Sam Pirosko (Eastlake, Ohio/Eastlake North) scored seven points, five of which were from the line.
  • Obenrader led all-scorers with 15 points. She fell just short of a double-double with nine boards
  • Chelsea Rourke (Gibsonia, Pa./Pine-Richland) scored double-figures for the third straight game as she finished with 12 points. She tied her season-high six boards for the second straight game. This marks her 57th career game scoring at least 10 points.
  • Tewes flirted with a double-double scoring eight points and grabbing a game-high nine boards. She also tallied a game leading five steals.
  • Mitchell added seven points and a game-high six assists.
  • Gannon has struggled taking care of the ball throughout the season, but only committed 10 turnovers in Saturday's action to mark a season-best.
  • They forced the Huskies to commit 11 turnovers and scored 15 points on Bloomsburg's mistakes.
UP NEXT
  • The Knights have a break for the holidays but return to action at home on Jan. 3 vs. cross-county rival Edinboro.
