Knights Edge Huskies for Second Straight Win, 89-84

  • The Short Story: Gannon used clutch shooting in the final seconds to win its second straight game on the road against Bloomsburg, 89-84, on Saturday afternoon. Chris Clancy (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Peter's Boys) continued to have the hot hand with a team-high 17 points to pace the Golden Knights.
GAMEDAY MEDIA CENTER HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Gannon jumped out a to an early four point, 9-5, advantage after Victor Olawoye (Elmont, N.Y./Elmont Memorial) found Michael Tertsea (Benue State, Nigeria/John Carroll) for a dunk at the 16:13 mark. Bloomsburg then answered to steal the lead, 11-9, following a three pointer from Justin Anderson. Gannon pushed back with a 7-0 run to build a 23-8 lead with 9:22 to play in the half.
  • The Huskies retaliated to lock the contest, 26-26, by the 7:23 mark. The Knights then found an offensive rhythm closing the half with a strong 18-7 run fueled by five points from Javier Valeiras (La Gomera, Spain/IES Felo Monzon). Gannon led at the intermission, 44-33. Clancy led all scorers at the break with 12 points.
  • Both teams exchanged buckets to open the second half until Frank Webb Jr. (Baltimore, Md./Our Lady of Mount Carmel) knocked down a jumper to make the score 49-36 with 17:20 to play. Gannon continued to apply pressure growing its largest lead of the contest, 61-45, after Matt Johnson (Chicago, Ill./Adlai E. Stevenson) found Kevin Dodds (Downingtown, Pa./Bishop Shanahan) for a layup at the 10:57 mark. However, Bloomsburg would not go away and cut the Gannon lead down to 10, 65-55, to force a timeout.
  • The Huskies continued their late surge with a 6-0 run of their own to cut the Knight edge down to four, 65-61. Gannon then answered with a crucial 10-4 run to stretch their lead back up to 10, 75-65, after Dodds drained a layup with 4:22 remaining. Bloomsburg made one final comeback attempt with a 15-6 run to pull within one, 81-80, after Max Wagner delivered a layup with 49 seconds to play. However, the Knights held off the Huskies after Olawoye knocked down a pair of clutch free throws to ice the 89-84 victory for Gannon.
GAME NOTES
  • With the win, Gannon earned its second straight win. It marks the second time this season the Knights have won back-to-back games.
  • Gannon won the rebounding battle, 39-24. The Knights have won the rebounding battle in seven of their first nine games this season.
  • As a team, Gannon shot 52.8 percent from the field (28-53) and 46.7 percent from three (7-15).
  • Clancy paced the Knights with a team-high 17 points with four rebounds and two assists. It was his second straight game reaching double figures and sixth time reaching double digits in scoring this season. Clancy shot 5-of-10 from three and 6-of-11 from the field. He has connected on at least four three pointers in five games this season.
  • Dodds netted a season-high 14 points with five rebounds. It was his first game this season posting double figures in scoring.
  • Cisero chipped in 12 points with five rebounds and two assists. It was his second straight game and fifth time this season contributing double digits in scoring.
  • Johnson added his second game with double figures in scoring with 12 points. He also registered four assists and three rebounds.
  • Webb rounded out the top performers with a game-high and season-best 10 rebounds, including eight on the defensive end. He also tallied nine points, three assists, one block and one steal.

  • Gannon returns to action after the holiday break hosting Edinboro (4-4, 1-3 PSAC) on Jan. 3. Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m. at Hammermill Center.
