Knights Hold Off Mountaineers on the Road, 74-67

  • The Short Story: Three players reached double digits in scoring to help Gannon edge Mansfield on the road, 74-67, on Friday afternoon. Chris Clancy (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Peter's Boys) led all scorers with a career-high 22 points and shot 6-of-9 from three to pace the Golden Knights.
GAMEDAY MEDIA CENTER HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Both teams exchanged buckets in the first half that featured 18 total lead changes. Mansfield was able to steal the lead, 21-10, after Trevor English knocked down a jumper at the 7:03 mark. After a pair of free throws from DeAnte Cisero (Chicago, Ill./Montgomery County (Ky.)) and a Mansfield jumper, both teams found themselves locked, 23-23, with 5:47 to play in the half.
  • The Knights offense then erupted with a momentum swinging 20-6 run to close the half. The streak was fueled by 14 points from Clancy, including four three pointers. Gannon led at the intermission, 43-29.
  • Clancy led all scorers at the break with 17 points and shot 5-of-6 from three with two steals and two rebounds. Frank Webb Jr. (Baltimore, Md./Our Lady of Mount Carmel) distributed six assists with four points and two steals to round out the top performers in the first half of play.
  • Gannon came out firing in the second half with a 9-3 run, which featured five points from Clancy. The streak helped Gannon build its largest lead of the game, 52-32, with 17:22 remaining. Mansfield slowly trimmed the Gannon edge down to five, 62-57, after Jonathan Ward buried a triple at the 7:58 mark.
  • Following a timeout, Mansfield connected on a dunk and a three pointer to tie the contest, 62-62, with 5:50 to play. The Knights finished the final five minutes of play closing out the Mountaineers with a 12-5 run, including shooting 8-of-11 from the free throw line over that span. Gannon went on to snap its three-game losing streak to earn the win, 74-67.
GAME NOTES
  • Gannon picked up its first road win of the season and snapped a three-game losing streak.
  • After using the same starting five for the last six games, Gannon used its third different combination of the season which included Victor Olawoye (Elmont, N.Y./Elmont Memorial), Micheal Tertsea, Webb, Clancy and Cisero.
  • As a team, Gannon held the edge in rebounds, 36-25. The Knights have won the rebounding battle in six of their first eight games this season.
  • Gannon shot 48.2 percent from the field (27-56) and 44.4 percent from three (8-18) as a team.
  • Clancy netted a game-high and season-best 22 points. It marked his first-career game reaching the 20 point plateau and his fifth time reaching double digits in scoring this season. He shot 6-of-9 from three and 8-of-11 from field in the contest. Clancy also chipped in a season-high three steals with three rebounds and one assist.
  • Webb logged a season-high 36 minutes and posted double digits in scoring for fifth straight game with 11 points. He has reached double figures in scoring six total times this season. Webb also contributed a game-high and career-best nine assists with six rebounds and two steals.
  • Cisero played a season-high 36 minutes and registered 10 points with eight rebounds and one assist. It was his fourth time recording double figures in scoring this season.
  • Eight Knights contributed at least four points in the contest.
UP NEXT
  • Gannon wraps up its road trip at Bloomsburg tomorrow. Tip-off is set for 3:00 p.m. at Nelson Fieldhouse.
  • It will mark the 14th all-time meeting between these two programs dating back to 1964-65.
  • Gannon leads the all-time series with Bloomsburg, 10-3.
