HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Frank Webb Jr. (Baltimore, Md./Our Lady of Mount Carmel) stepped in front of a pass on the opening possession of the game and went the length of the court to score the first points of the game. St. Bonaventure got on the board on their next trip down the court, but it took a few more minutes for a pair of 3-pointers to help lift the hosts to a 9-2 lead.
  • Another layup out of Webb ended the SBU run, and Chris Clancy (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Peter's Boys) followed it up 20 seconds later with a 3-pointer from the left wing that quickly made it a two-point game at 9-7 with 14:49 still left in the opening half.
  • The hosts kept up their hot shooting though, hitting a pair of triples and holding the Golden Knights scoreless for a four-minute span. That allowed the Bonnies to push the lead into double digits for the first time, and despite a slick lay-in from Javier Valeiras (La Gomera, Spain/IES Felo Monzon) and a dunk from Michael Tertsea (Benue State, Nigeria/John Carroll) off a feed inside from Kevin Dodds (Downingtown, Pa./Bishop Shanahan), SBU opened up a 30-13 lead as the clock went under seven minutes to play in the half.
  • A 3-pointer from Benjamin Horsford (Las Vegas, Nev./Wakefield (Va.)) with three minutes left in the half got it back to 17 at 38-21, and a pair of free throws from Sean Colosimo (Wexford, Pa./Pine-Richland) with less than a minute to go took the teams into the break at 41-23.
  • After a Tertsea layup to start the second-half scoring, the Bonnies went on a tear, scoring the next 11 points before a 3-pointer out of Valeiras stopped the run. The hosts went on to build its largest lead of the night at 61-33 with 10:52 on the clock, but the Golden Knights closed strong over the final 10 minutes.
  • A steal from Chris Roberts (Chicago, Ill./Morgan Park) started a fastbreak, with Valeiras converting on the other end to start the Gannon run. Horsford then hit back-to-back 3-pointers to suddenly slash the lead to 20 and force a St. Bonaventure timeout.
  • A turnaround jumper from DeAnte Cisero (Chicago, Ill./Montgomery County (Ky.)) kept that streak going, and Horsford capped it with another trey that made it 61-46. SBU steadied the ship to keep it at a 13-0 Gannon run, although Roberts started another fastbreak with some pesky defense, this time finishing it off himself as the clock rolled under three minutes to play.

GAME NOTES
  • Horsford made his Gannon debut on the home floor of the Division I opponent and made it count. The redshirt freshman nailed the first shot of his career, and finished with 12 points on 4-of-6 shooting, all from beyond the arc.
  • The 12 points matched Webb for a team high. Webb was also 4-of-6 shooting, and added two steals and an assist. The junior has scored in double figures in five out of six games this season, including four straight.
  • Saturday was the second time Gannon suited up against a Division I foe this season, following October's exhibition at Indiana. It was the first regular season contest against a Division I team since the 2004-05 season, when the Golden Knights faced the University of Detroit, now known as Detroit Mercy.
  • Saturday's game was also the 28th all-time meeting between Gannon and St. Bonaventure, which are separated by just 90 miles. The teams met 27 times between 1944-45 and 1976-77.
  • Gannon assisted on 11 of their 19 made field goals. Dodds, Valeiras, Roberts and Victor Olawoye (Elmont, N.Y./Elmont Memorial) each posted two helpers.
  • Twelve Gannon players saw the floor, with all 12 playing for at least nine minutes and 11 of 12 taking a shot. Valeiras, Horsford and Roberts set career highs in minutes played.
