Gannon Comeback Falls Short against Unbeaten West Chester, 72-67

  • The Short Story: The Knights went on a 6-4 run in the final 55 seconds of play after late three pointers from Victor Olawoye (Elmont, N.Y./Elmont Memorial) and Chris Clancy (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Peter's Boys), but could not complete the comeback and fell to unbeaten West Chester, 72-67.
GAMEDAY MEDIA CENTER HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Gannon opened the contest establishing an early 12-9 edge after Matt Johnson (Chicago, Ill./Adlai E. Stevenson) netted a jumper at the 15:51 mark.  After the teams locked the score at 15-15, the Golden Rams went on an 8-3 run to make the score 20-18 with 10:05 to play in the first half. Frank Webb Jr. (Baltimore, Md./Our Lady of Mount Carmel) answered on the next possession after Kevin Dodds (Downingtown, Pa./Bishop Shanahan) found him on the perimeter for a triple to regain the lead, 21-20.
  • The Golden Rams stole the edge back using an 8-1 run to make the score 28-22 at the 6:06 mark. Later in the first, DeAnte Cisero (Chicago, Ill./Montgomery County (Ky.)) knocked down a three pointer to cut the deficit down to three, 34-31, with 24 seconds to play in the first half. Gannon headed to the locker room trailing, 34-31, at the break. Olawoye led the Knights with eight points in the first half to go along with two steals.
  • Johnson quickly pulled the Knights within one, 34-33, after he drove the lane for the layup on the first possession of the second frame. The Golden Rams then found an offensive rhythm after a 10-2 run to open up their largest lead of the game, 44-35, with 17:00 to play. Gannon slowly chipped the West Chester edge down to four, 56-52, following a Cisero free throw at the 10:52 mark.
  • After trading baskets down the stretch, Gannon made one final push with a 6-4 run in the final 55 seconds of play with three pointers from Olawoye and Clancy to pull within three, 70-67, with 14 seconds to play. However, the Knights could not complete the comeback and went to drop the contest, 72-67.
     
GAME NOTES
  • As a team, Gannon held the edge in rebounds (39-33) and assists (17-13). The Knights also generated 10 steals.
  • Gannon shot a season-best 10-of-20 (.500) from three and 24-of-58 from the field (.414).
  • Olawoye led the Knights with a game-high 22 points. He delivered a game-best six three pointers and also added three steals and three rebounds. The game marked his second straight home opener producing at least 20 points.
  • Webb reached double digits in scoring with 13 points. He also chipped in seven rebounds, five assists and one steal.
  • Johnson handed out a game-high six assists with four points and three rebounds.
  • Micheal Tertsea chipped in nine points and seven rebounds with two steals.
  • Seven different Knights contributed at least four points in the contest.
