Gannon Falls Short in PSAC Final Four

  • Final Score: Shepherd 3, Gannon 0

  • The Short Story: Top-seeded Gannon came up short against fifth-seeded Shepherd in the PSAC Final Four, 3-0, on Friday evening. Ashley Beyers (Lanark, Ill./Eastland) paced the Lady Knights with a match-high 38 assists and 10 digs.
 GAME DAY MEDIA CENTER HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Shepherd used a fast start to jump out to a 9-3 lead in the first frame. Gannon answered with five straight points to pull within one, 9-8, after Lauren Sampson (Hilliard, Ohio/Hilliard Davidson) connected on momentum swinging kill. The Rams responded to build an eight point, 24-16, edge after four straight points. Shepherd won the opening frame, 25-20.
  • The Rams once again established an early, 17-9, lead in the second set. The Knights then began to push back with a crucial 9-0 run to steal the lead, 18-17, following a Sampson kill. Shepherd went on a 5-2 run of its own to regain the lead, 22-20. The Rams held off the Knights the second set, 25-22.
  • The third and final set saw a match-high seven lead changes after Gannon opened up a 13-7 lead. Shepherd then came storming back to lock the set, 18-18. Ashley Kerestes (Loves Park, Ill./Rockford Lutheran) answered for the Knights late in the set to regain the edge, 23-22, after she delivered a kill. However, the Rams then rattled off three straight points to win the frame, 25-23, and the match, 3-0.
GAME NOTES
  • As a team, Gannon held the edge in kills (48-42) and assists (44-39). The Knights also totaled five service aces.  
  • Beyers notched her 10th double-double of the season with a match-high 38 assists and 10 digs. It marked her 20th straight match with at least 30 assists this season.
  • Sampson tallied her eighth double-double of the season with a team-best 13 kills and 10 digs. She also chipped in a match-high two service aces.
  • Ally Smith (Penfield, N.Y./Webster Schroeder) reached double digits in kills with 10 to go along with eight digs.
  • Toni Leitshuh (Manhattan, Ill./Lincoln-Way Central) contributed 10 digs on the defensive end of the floor. She has reached double digits in digs in her last 24 straight matches.
  • Kerestes posted eight kills with a team-high three blocks.
