Smith, Beyers Lift Gannon Past Edinboro in PSAC Tournament, 3-1

  • The Short Story: Ashley Beyers (Lanark, Ill./Eastland) handed out a career-high 56 assists and Ally Smith (Penfield, N.Y./Webster Schroeder) contributed a career-best 25 kills to guide Gannon past Edinboro, 3-1, in the quarterfinals of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Tournament on Tuesday night.
 GAME DAY MEDIA CENTER HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Edinboro started fast doubling up Gannon, 8-4, to seize the momentum. The Lady Knights battled back to steal the lead, 14-13, after a Smith kill. However, the Fighting Scots answered with five straight points to regain the edge, 18-14. Edinboro won the first set, 25-22. 
  • Gannon pushed back in the second frame with a quick 8-2 lead to force an Edinboro timeout. The Knights then began to take control growing their edge to nine, 17-8, following a kill from Smith. Gannon took the second set, 25-19.
  • The Knights kept their foot on the gas opening up a six point, 11-5, advantage in the third frame. Gannon then expanded its lead into double digits taking advantage of an Edinboro attack error, 20-9. Lauren Sampson (Hilliard, Ohio/Hilliard Davidson) connected on a kill to seal the 25-13 third set win.
  • In the fourth and final set, Gannon opened up a 12-6 edge after a Smith kill. The Knights then sealed the win stretching their lead into double digits, 20-10, after a Beyers kill. Gannon won the fourth set, 25-11.
GAME NOTES
  • Gannon stretched its win streak to 12 matches, which is its longest win streak this season. The Knights assembled 18 straight wins during the 2018 season.
  • As a team, the Knights recorded a season-high 65 kills for the second time this season (McKendree, Sept. 6).
  • As a team, Gannon also tallied a season-best 64 assists, which is the most since the 2014 season (72, Clarion, Nov. 1, 2014).
  • Smith reached the 1,000 career kill mark with 1,024 after totaling a career-best 25 kills, which is the most kills in a match for an individual since the 2015 season (29, Hannah Kren (Waukesha, Wis./Wisconsin Lutheran), Oct. 5, 2015). She also added 11 digs and three aces to notch her 15th double-double of the season.
  • Beyers totaled a career-best 56 assists, which is the most assists in a match for an individual since the 2015 season (59, Morgan Walters (Girard, Ohio/Girard), Oct. 31, 2015). She also added 16 digs and two aces. It marked the fourth time in her career she has produced at least 50 assists in a match and her ninth double-double of the season.
  • Toni Leitshuh (Manhattan, Ill./Lincoln-Way Central) registered a match-high 29 digs. She has reached double digits in digs in her last 23 straight matches.
