KEY SEQUENCE
  • An 11-4 run by the Golden Knights cut the Bowie State lead in half as the teams came down the stretch, making it a 55-48 game with three minutes to play. The Bulldogs didn't miss a shot the rest of the way though, going 9-for-9 at the free-throw line to cut the comeback attempt short.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Tough defense out of the gate kept things scoreless for the first three-plus minutes, with Chris Clancy (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Peter's Boys) burying a 3-pointer to get the Golden Knights on the board first. DeAnte Cisero (Chicago, Ill./Montgomery County (Ky.)) converted a three-point play just over a minute later to make it 6-2 five minutes in.
  • Another basket from Cisero and trey from Clancy pushed the lead out to 11-4 for Gannon, and a triple out of Victor Olawoye (Elmont, N.Y./Elmont Memorial) stopped a short Bowie run to make it 14-8. The defenses started hounding once again, as the teams went over three minutes without another basket.
  • Jonathan Harewood (Baldwin, N.Y./St. Anthony's) stopped that drought with a bucket, starting a 10-3 run for the guests that handed them their biggest lead of the night. Clancy picked up a steal to start the ball the other way for one basket, and hit a 3-pointer to keep the run going.
  • After a Maximiliano Andreatta (Resistencia, Chaco, Argentina/Colegio Informático) trey, the Knights led 24-11 at the 4:30 mark of the first half. Bowie State would answer with a 13-0 run of its own, but Olawoye nailed a 3-pointer off a feed from Matt Johnson (Chicago, Ill./Adlai E. Stevenson) to give Gannon the lead at the break.
  • The hosts started the second half with nine straight points in the first four minutes, but a jumper from Cisero and a three-point play from Johnson got it back to a two-point game at 34-32 with 14:57 on the clock. Back-to-back 3-pointer out of the Bulldogs helped push the lead back out to 42-32 over the next two minutes.
  • Clancy stopped that momentum with another triple, though Bowie followed that with two big second-chance baskets to make it 46-35 at the midway mark of the half. The Bulldogs started getting to the line after that, converting two pairs of free throws around a Michael Tertsea (Benue State, Nigeria/John Carroll) dunk.
  • Free throws from Clancy and Tertsea got it back to a 10-point game, and Sean Colosimo (Wexford, Pa./Pine-Richland) did the same with a steal and score with five minutes to play. Harewood converted a three-point play, followed shortly by a Cisero jumper to get out on a 5-0 run to cut it to 55-48.
  • Buckets from Cisero twice more made it a seven-point edge, and he capped the last with an and-1 to make it 59-53 with 1:23 to play, but Bowie followed that immediately with its only field goal of the final 10 minutes, and sank four free throws to hang on.

GAME NOTES
  • Clancy kicked off his collegiate career with 14 points on 4-of-10 shooting, all from beyond the arc. The freshman added two assists and a steal as well.
  • Cisero matched his teammate with 14 points, his coming on 6-of-8 shooting, all from inside the arc. That went with four rebounds and a steal.
  • Johnson dished out six assists, adding a steal and two rebounds. The Golden Knights assisted on 14 of 19 made field goals for the game.
  • Tertsea and Kevin Dodds (Downingtown, Pa./Bishop Shanahan) each pulled in eight rebounds, helping to lead Gannon to a 36-23 edge on the glass.
