Men's Soccer Drops First Match Of The Year To California Saturday Night

The Short Story: Gannon's streak ended Saturday night as California took a 1-0 win to hand the Golden Knights their first loss of the season. Chance Pursifull scored in the 67th minute to lead the Vulcans to their first shutout of the year.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The teams were knotted 0-0 heading into the halftime with only four shots each before the break.
  • Evan Blunkosky gave chase to the ball just left of the box. Blunkosky sent it in to Chance Pursifull who used a few touches to beat the Gannon defender and shoot the ball into the bottom right of the net for the game winner.
 
GAME NOTES
  • The Knights took 13 shots to Cal U's eight, but only managed one shot on goal.
  • Alex Lee Yaw (Jamestown, N.Y./Mercyhurst Prep) led Gannon with three shots. One shot went off the right post and another off the crossbar to narrowly miss tying the game for Gannon in the final five minutes.
  • Tinashe Katsande (Norwich, England/Dereham Sixth Form College), Austin Ludwik (Gold Coast, Australia/The Southport School), and Sergio Del Castillo (Madrid, Spain) each finished with two shots, while Anthony Marafioti (Melbourne, Australia/Penleigh & Essendon), Char Barrick, Ivan Manfredi (Chiavari, Italy/Liceo Scientifico Marconi Delpino), and Toby Gower (Norwich, England/Long Stratton) tallied one shot.
  • Katsande's shot was Gannon's lone shot on goal.
  • Chandler Hallwood (Halifax, England/Woodhouse Grove) made three stops in goal for the Knights.
  • Negus Johnson and Matt Yingling took a team-high two shots.
  • Joseph Valeriano made one save in goal.
