Lady Knights Outlast Warriors, 3-1, to Extend Win Streak to Seven

  • The Short Story: Gannon outlasted East Stroudsburg, 3-1, to push its win streak to seven on the road Friday evening. Ally Smith (Penfield, N.Y./Webster Schroeder) led the Lady Knights posting a double-double with 11 kills and 12 digs.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Both teams traded points until Gannon took its first lead of the night, 6-5, after a block by Ashley McClung (Charleston, W.Va./George Washington). The Warriors then battled back to steal the edge, 12-11. The teams continued to exchange points to lock the contest at 24-24. Gannon then used a clutch 4-2 run to close the frame and pick up the win, 28-26.
  • The Warriors retaliated in the second set sprinting out to a 6-2 advantage. Gannon responded with a 4-0 run to deadlock the frame, 6-6, after a kill from Ashley Kerestes (Loves Park, Ill./Rockford Lutheran). East Stroudsburg answered to build a five point, 15-10, edge to force a Gannon timeout. The Warriors went on to steal the second set, 25-18.
  • East Stroudsburg opened the third frame creating a 14-9 edge. The Knights responded with a 7-1 run to capture the lead, 16-15. The Knights didn't look back and went on to win the set, 25-17.
  • The teams continued to battle into the fourth set to lock the contest at 6-6. The Knights then rattled off three straight points highlighted by a McClung kill to open up a 9-6 edge. Gannon didn't let off the gas pushing its lead to 15-8 following a Kerestes kill. The Knights went on to close out the frame, 25-16, and the match, 3-1.
GAME NOTES
  • Gannon opens Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) play 4-0 for the first time since 2014 when they advanced to the NCAA Division II Atlantic Regional.
  • As a team, Gannon held the edge in kills (54-51), assists (53-50) and digs (66-60). The Knights also posted a .203 hitting percentage as a team.
  • Ashley Beyers (Lanark, Ill./Eastland) handed out a match-best 45 assists. It was her fifth time this season distributing at least 40 assists in a match.
  • Smith notched her second straight and fourth double-double of the season with 11 kills and 12 digs.
  • Maggie Greenfield (Woodstock, Ontario/Woodstock Collegiate Institute) posted a team-best 12 kills and team-high five blocks.  
  • McClung reached double digits in kills for the seventh time this season with 10.  She also added a team-high five blocks.
  • Toni Leitshuh (Manhattan, Ill./Lincoln-Way Central) notched a team-best 21 digs. It was her fifth time this season reaching the 20-dig plateau.
UP NEXT
  • Gannon continues PSAC play at Kutztown tomorrow at 2:00 p.m.
  • Last season, Gannon blanked Kutztown, 3-0. The Knights have won the last seven matches against the Golden Bears dating back to 2012 and lead the all-time series, 12-1.
