Lady Knights Breeze Past Vulcans for Fifth Straight Sweep

Gannon reaches 20-win mark for 11th straight season.

  • The Short Story: Gannon used a season-high .432 hitting percentage to roll past California, 3-0, for their fifth straight sweep Thursday evening.
 GAME DAY MEDIA CENTER HOW IT HAPPENED
  • After the Vulcans stole the first point of the match, the Lady Knights took control with an 8-1 run to steal the lead, 8-2. Gannon continued to apply pressure doubling up California, 14-7, following a kill from Ashley McClung (Charleston, W.Va./George Washington). The Knights went on to close out the set, 25-13.
  • Gannon stayed in an offensive rhythm in the second frame running out a quick 6-1 advantage after a California ball handling error. The Knights then stretched their lead up to 10, 15-5, following McClung smashing a kill past the Vulcan defense. Gannon went on to win the second set, 25-14. As a team, the Knights recorded a .472 hitting percentage in the frame.
  • Gannon jumped out to a 6-3 lead in the third frame after a kill from Ally Smith (Penfield, N.Y./Webster Schroeder). California then battled back to lock the frame, 8-8. The Knights answered back building an, 18-11, lead after a kill from Smith to force a Vulcan timeout. Gannon then closed out the set, 25-11.
GAME NOTES
  • Gannon recorded its fifth straight and 13th sweep of the season.
  • The Knights reached the 20-win mark for the 11th straight season.
  • Gannon has an 11-0 mark at home this season. The Knights last regular season home loss came on Oct. 28, 2017 against East Stroudsburg.
  • Gannon held the edge in kills (48-20), assists (46-18) and digs (51-28) The Knights also added seven service aces.
  • As a team, the Knights posted a season-high .432 hitting percentage. Gannon registered at least a .300 hitting percentage in each set.
  • Toni Leitshuh (Manhattan, Ill./Lincoln-Way Central) appeared in her 131st career match to move into first place on the Gannon all-time matches played list. She also added a match-best 17 digs on the defensive end.
  • Ashley Kerestes (Loves Park, Ill./Rockford Lutheran) tallied a match-high 14 kills with a season-high .684 hitting percentage.
  • Ashley Beyers (Lanark, Ill./Eastland) contributed a match-high 41 assists to go along with five digs and three kills. She has produced at least 40 assists in 11 matches this season.
  • Sampson also totaled 14 digs and 8 kills.
UP NEXT
  • Gannon returns to action on Saturday hosting Seton Hill for Senior Day/Alumni Night. First serve is set for 7:00 p.m.
  • In their most recent meeting, Seton Hill edged Gannon, 3-2, in the NCAA Division II Atlantic Regional.  However, the Knights lead the all-time series, 15-6.
