Gannon Falls Short in Exhibition Play at Indiana

  • The Short Story: Gannon pulled within eight at halftime, but could not hold off Indiana in the second half and went on to drop the exhibition contest, 84-54, Tuesday evening. Frank Webb Jr. (Baltimore, Md./Our Lady of Mount Carmel) netted a team-high 13 points to pace the Knights.
GAMEDAY MEDIA CENTER HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Indiana took control early running out to a 12-2 edge with 17:26 on the clock. Gannon battled back to cut the deficit down to six, 18-12, at the 13:18 mark following a layup from DeAnte Cisero (Chicago, Ill./Montgomery County (Ky.)). The Knights continued to apply pressure and took their first lead of the night, 27-26, after Cisero knocked down a jumper with 2:12 on the clock. The Hoosiers retaliated with an 11-2 run to regain the lead, 37-29, to close the half.
  • Gannon shot 42.3% (11-26) from the field in the first half in comparison to Indiana's 46.9% (15-32). Cisero led the Knights with nine points, while Webb added seven points and four rebounds.
  • Indiana came out firing in the second half connecting on its first three possessions to expand its lead to 43-29. Webb answered for the Knights burying a triple to make the score 43-32 at the 17:42 mark. The Hoosiers then began to pull away stretching their edge up to 20, 60-40, with 11:06 remaining. The Knights would not go away and rattled off five straight points highlighted by a three pointer from Javier Valeiras (La Gomera, Spain/IES Felo Monzon) to make the score 60-45 with 9:57 to play. However, the Hoosiers put the game out of reach growing their largest lead of contest, 81-51, with 2:15 remaining.
GAME NOTES
  • The game marked the first time in four years that Gannon faced a Division I opponent in exhibition play.
  • The game also marked the first-ever meeting between Gannon and Indiana.
  • As a team, the Hoosiers held the edge in rebounds (39-25) and assists (13-9).
  • Webb was the only Knight to reach double digits in scoring with a team-high 13 points. He also added four rebounds and three assists.
  • Cisero shot 4-of-8 from the field and netted nine points.
  • Velerias connected on a team-best two three pointers and totaled eight points off the bench.
  • The Knights had eight players register at least two points in the contest.
UP NEXT
  • Gannon opens regular season play at Bowie State on Nov. 16 at 4:00 p.m.
  • In their most recent meeting with Bowie State last season, the Knights fell to the Bulldogs, 56-47. However, Gannon leads the all-time series, 4-3.
  • Last season, the Knights won their season opener after topping Wheeling Jesuit, 90-75.
