McCartney Scores Two Goals in Tie vs. California

The Short Story: They Lady Knights played to a 3-3 draw Saturday afternoon at California. This marks the second time this season these two teams played to overtime. Megan McCartney (Chicora, Pa./Karns City) scored two goals for Gannon in a four minute stretch in the second half.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Vulcans jumped out to an early lead with a goal from Abbey McComb in the 15th minute. McComb scored on a cross pass from Lindsie Galbreath. McComb netted the ball in the bottom left corner.
  • McCartney tied the match 1-1 in the 60th minute on a penalty kick.
  • Cal U responded in the 63rd minute with a goal from Juliana Cruz. Cruz scored on a pass from Sarah Refosco. She placed her goal in the bottom left corner of the net to go up 2-1.
  • McCartney didn't let the Vulcans hold on to the lead for very long as she tied the match again in the 64th minute. She scored on a free kick in to the top right corner of the net.
  • Cruz got her chance at a PK in the 69th minute to give Cal U their third lead of the match.
  • Maddie North (Leysdown-on-Sea, England/The Westlands School) forced overtime in the 90th minute as she scored with only 30 left on the clock. She was assisted by goalkeeper Kennedy Solymosi (Eastlake, Ohio/Lake Catholic).
 
GAME NOTES
  • McCartney's penalty kick is her second of the season series with the Vulcans. She won the game for the Knights earlier this season with a PK at McConnell Family Stadium.
  • Prior to the start of the 2019 season, McCartney had four career goals. She surpassed that total in just this season with her two goals vs. Cal U. She had four career goals, and now has five goals in the 2019 season.
  • McCartney finished with a match-high six shots and four on goal. Kayla Bevacqua (Welland, Ontario/Notre Dame) added four shots for the Knights, while Emily Cekella (Harmony, Pa./Seneca Valley) and North each had two.
  • Solymosi tallied five saves in goal for Gannon while Carly Gobbie made six stops in goal for the Vulcans.
  • Cruz and Galbreath each took three shots, all of which were on goal for Cal U.
 
UP NEXT
  • The Knights are back in action Wednesday for their home closer vs. Edinboro.
  • Kickoff is set for 6 p.m.
  • The teams played to a 2-2 draw at Edinboro earlier this season. Aesling McCullough (Moon, Pa./Our Lady of the Sacred Heart) and Hannah Hays (Butler, Pa./Butler) scored in the tie.
  • Wednesday's match will be in honor of a Gannon alum who is fighting cancer. Both soccer teams and Gannon's softball team are participating in the event. More information will be available prior to the match.
