Early Goal Leads to Shutout Over Crosstown Rival Mercyhurst

The Short Story: The Golden Knights defeated crosstown rival Mercyhurst in the nightcap of Saturday's action. Alex Lee Yaw (Jamestown, N.Y./Mercyhurst Prep) scored the game winner in the 19th minute, while Sergio Del Castillo (Madrid, Spain) added a second goal for the Knights in the 85th. Chandler Hallwood (Halifax, England/Woodhouse Grove) recorded his second straight shutout in goal.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Lee Yaw scored the first goal of today's match to get another game winner under his belt. In the 19th minute, Lee Yaw beat the challenging Mercyhurst goalkeeper skipping the ball past for an easy finish into the low center part of the net.
  • Del Castillo added another for Gannon in the 85th minute. Castillo won the ball from the defender and used two touches to shoot from 20 yards out. Ball went into the low right of the net to put Gannon up 2-0.
 
GAME NOTES
  • Lee Yaw has scored a goal in four of the last five wins for Gannon. Lee Yaw's goal keeps him in the third spot in the conference with eight goals on the year so far.
  • This is his second straight match with a goal.
  • Lee Yaw, Chad Barrick (Gahanna, Ohio/Gahanna Lincoln), Anthony Marafioti (Melbourne, Australia/Penleigh & Essendon), and Ivan Manfredi (Chiavari, Italy/Liceo Scientifico Marconi Delpino) all took two shots, while Joe Knox (Gold Coast, Australia/The Southport School) and Castillo finished with one each.
  • Lee Yaw led the match with two shots on goal. Castillo, Marafioti, and Barrick combined for the rest of Gannon's shots on goal.
  • The Knights defense held the Lakers scoreless and to just six shots with none on goal. Gannon led the shot battle 16-1.
  • Mario Castel and Shams El-Akabawy led the Lakers with two shots each.
  • Hallwood recorded his second straight shutout in goal.
  • Martin Jarc made three saves in net for the Lakers and allowed both Gannon goals.

  • Gannon returns to action next Saturday on the road at California.
