Coccurello Scores 40 Seconds Into Overtime, Lady Knights Sweep Series With UPJ

The Short Story: The Lady Knights won their first overtime game of the season Saturday afternoon with a 3-2 win over Pitt-Johnstown. Vanessa Coccurello (Hamilton, Ontario/St. Jean de Brebeuf) scored the game winner just 40 seconds into the first overtime period to lead Gannon to the season sweep over UPJ.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Kayla Bevacqua (Welland, Ontario/Notre Dame) connected on her first goal of the year in the 12th minute for the Knights. Aesling McCullough (Moon, Pa./Our Lady of the Sacred Heart) passed the ball to Bevacqua who sent the shot into the net from forty yards out into the top of the net. Gannon goes up 1-0.
  • The Mountain Cats tied the match in the 35th minutes. Emily Esser sent a cross pass into the net for Abby LaDuke for her ninth goal of the season.
  • Emily Cekella (Harmony, Pa./Seneca Valley) gave the Knights the lead again in the 77th minute. Megan McCartney (Chicora, Pa./Karns City) made a pass to Cekella in the box. Cekella scored her fourth goal of the season giving Gannon a 2-1 advantage.
  • Esser added a goal to go with her assist for UPJ in the 83rd minute. Abby Grychowski (Erie, Pa./Villa Maria) would take the only Gannon shot before the end of regulation leading to the third overtime match of the season.
  • Vanessa Coccurello (Hamilton, Ontario/St. Jean de Brebeuf) ended the match just 40 seconds into the overtime period. She shot from the top of the box sending the ball into the goal for her first goal of the season.
 
GAME NOTES
  • This was Gannon's first overtime win since last season 3-2 win over West Chester.
  • Coccurello and Bevacqua's goals were their firsts of this season.
  • Cekella matched last season's goal total with her goal in today's match.
  • Coccurello finished the match with a season-high seven shots, including four on goal.
  • Bevacqua and Cekella each took four shots.
  • Maddie North (Leysdown-on-Sea, England/The Westlands School) (3), Sarah Fails (Girard, Pa./Villa Maria) (2), Brigid Casey (Cincinnati, Ohio/McAuley) (1), Emily Manczka (1), Megan McCartney (Chicora, Pa./Karns City) (1), and McCullough each finished with shots in the match.
  • The Knights took 25 shots to UPJ's seven.
  • Kennedy Solymosi (Eastlake, Ohio/Lake Catholic) made three saves in goal for Gannon, while Maria Mosquera made five for UPJ.
