Gannon Rolls Past West Chester for 10th Straight Win

  • The Short Story: Lauren Sampson (Hilliard, Ohio/Hilliard Davidson) posted a season-high and match-best 18 kills to push Gannon past West Chester, 3-0, for its 10th straight win Thursday night.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Gannon sprinted out to a 9-0 lead to open the contest after a kill from Sampson. The Lady Knights continued to apply pressure stretching the edge up to 16-2 following a kill from Toni Leitshuh (Manhattan, Ill./Lincoln-Way Central). Gannon went on to win the set, 25-11.
  • After trading points to begin the second frame, Sampson smashed a kill past the Golden Rams defenders to put the Knights out in front, 8-3. Gannon then rattled off five straight points to increase its lead to double digits, 13-3, after a block by Ashley McClung (Charleston, W.Va./George Washington) and Maggie Greenfield (Woodstock, Ontario/Woodstock Collegiate Institute). The Knights went on to close out the frame, 25-15.
  • The Golden Rams fought back in the third set to create an 8-6 lead. McClung responded for the Knights with a kill to lock the score, 9-9. Gannon then began to pull away building a 19-14 lead following a Sampson kill. The Knights went on to close out the set, 25-17, and win the match, 3-0.
     
GAME NOTES
  • Gannon opens Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) play 7-0 for the first time since 2011 when they advanced to the NCAA Division II Atlantic Regional.
  • The Knights are one of three teams unbeaten in PSAC play this season and the only unbeaten team in the PSAC Northwest. Shepherd (16-0, 4-0) and Shippensburg (12-3, 4-0) are the others.
  • Gannon has recorded eight sweeps this season.
  • As a team, Gannon held the edge in kills (45-21), assists (41-20) and digs (49-43). The Knights also posted a .259 hitting percentage
  • Sampson recorded a season-high and match-best 18 kills to go along with a .311 hitting percentage. It was her fourth time this season reaching double digits in kills. She also added eight digs on the defensive end.
  • Kenzie Lasher (Ford City, Pa./Armstrong), Valerie Torres and Leitshuh posted 11 digs each.
  • Ashley Beyers (Lanark, Ill./Eastland) handed out a match-best 36 assists.
UP NEXT
  • Gannon wraps up its three match homestand hosting Millersville tomorrow. First serve is set for 7:00 p.m.
  • Last season, the Lady Knights blanked the Marauders, 3-0. Gannon leads the all-time series, 15-2.
