HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Gannon wasted no time silencing the Laker crowd jumping out to a 7-0 lead after three straight kills from Ally Smith (Penfield, N.Y./Webster Schroeder). Mercyhurst then pushed back to pull within three, 10-7. Gannon went on to push their lead into double digits, 21-11, after an attack error. The Lady Knights went on to win the opening set, 25-17.
  • The Lakers pushed back in the second frame opening up a 6-3 lead. Gannon then stormed back with six unanswered points to steal the lead, 9-6, after McClung smashed a kill. Gannon continued to apply pressure stretching their lead to 17-13 after Lauren Sampson (Hilliard, Ohio/Hilliard Davidson) connected on a kill. The Lakers then fought back to lock the set, 22-22. Gannon answered with three straight points, which included a set-winning kill from Ashley Kerestes (Loves Park, Ill./Rockford Lutheran) to steal the frame, 25-22.
  • Mercyhurst fought back in the third set to open up an 8-4 advantage and force a Gannon timeout. The two teams continued to trade points until the Lakers built an 18-14 edge to force the Lady Knights to burn their second timeout. Gannon went on to drop the set, 25-20.
  • The Lady Knights wasted little time taking control of the fourth set sprinting out to a 5-0 edge after McClung snuck a kill past the Laker defense. Gannon then increased its lead to 16-9 following a Valeria Torres (Gurabo, Puerto Rico/Notre Dame) service ace. The Lady Knights closed out the set, 25-17, and went on to win the match, 3-1.
