KEY SEQUENCE
  • Gannon used a 7-2 spurt in the opening moments of the fourth quarter that narrowed its deficit to one point at 52-51, but Pitt-Johnstown answered with three of the next four buckets to extend the lead to five (58-53) with under five minutes remaining. The Lady Knights cut the deficit to a pair with 1:23 remaining, but the Mountain Cats once again responded and scored the final five points of the matchup.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Gannon offense ran through Nicole LaCava (Hermitage, Pa./Hickory) early, as the senior scored the first basket of the game. Alli McGrath answered back for the Mountain Cats, hitting a 3-pointer followed a minute later by a foul-line jumper to give the guests their largest lead of the first half at 5-2, but LaCava got the Lady Knights back to within one point on the next possession.
  • UPJ went back ahead by three at 7-4, but Lauren Tewes (Waterford, Mich./Waterford Kettering) got things going with a three-point play, and Chelsea Rourke (Gibsonia, Pa./Pine-Richland) pushed the hosts ahead with a transition layup on a run started by Sydney Mitchell (Halethorpe, Md./Seton Keough) near the midway point of the first quarter. The Knights regained the lead on a Tori Obenrader (Fryburg, Pa./North Clarion) three-pointer at the 2:09 mark of the frame. It was one of two buckets in a 2:32 second span for Obenrader, who grabbed an offensive rebound and stuck the putback with four seconds left to push the Gannon edge to 18-14.
  • Alexis Hartwick lined up a three to hand the visitors a one-point lead, but it was short lived as Obenrader swung momentum back in the Lady Knights' favor with a three-pointer just 27 seconds later at 7:06 as Gannon held a 23-21 edge. The three kickstarted a string of three consecutive buckets scored by Obenrader for the Lady Knights, who took a 34-31 lead into the intermission.
  • A 7-0 run by the Mountain Cats pushed their advantage to 45-38 with 3:20 left in the third. L. Tewes trimmed the Gannon deficit to four points with a lay-in but Hartwick surged ahead for a fastbreak layup with just one second left on the third quarter clock.
  • Gannon opened the fourth with a 7-2 run, keyed by layups from L. Tewes and Mitchell and a three by Rourke. Layups from LaCava trimmed the GU deficit to three (6:17) and two (1:23), but UPJ closed out the game with the final five points.

GAME NOTES
  • Obenrader provided a big spark off the bench for Gannon in the first half, notching 13 points and five rebounds in just nine minutes of action. The freshman was a perfect 5-5 from the floor and connected on all three of her three-point attempts in the opening 20 minutes of action.
  • LaCava has tallied at least 16 points in eight of the past 10 games, shooting 72.7% (56-77) from the floor in that span.
  • Pitt-Johnstown outscored the Lady Knights in each of the final three quarters, but a 19-10 edge in the third put the visitors up by six heading into the final frame.
  • The Lady Knights committed just seven turnovers in the first half, but finished the game with 19.
  • LaCava (7-11 FTM-FTA) and L. Tewes (1-1 FTM-FTA) were the only two Gannon players to attempt a foul shot in the game. The 12 total foul shot attempts is the third lowest mark of the 2018-19 season.
  • L. Tewes played in her 100th collegiate contest tonight.
  • Gannon will play four of its next five games in the road, returning home again on January 19 to face Clarion for the Pink Zone Doubleheader.
