KEY SEQUENCE
  • Pitt-Johnstown reeled off a 10-point run to jump back in the game at 61-59 with 2:08 remaining. Daryl Porter (Southfield, Mich./Walled Lake Western) bounced back from an offensive foul on the next possession to rise and hit a jumper from the right elbow with 1:10 to play, but the Mountain Cats again pulled to within two on a layup. With the guests looking to make a defensive stop and have the ball with a chance to win, Porter pulled in a huge offensive rebound with five seconds left, ran the ball out to burn time, and hit a free throw with 0.4 on the clock to preserve the victory.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Mountain Cats got on the board with a jumper early, and got plenty of chances with offense rebounds, but Joe Fustine (Erie, Pa./Cathedral Prep) was still able to tie it at 2-2 with a layup nearly four minutes in. UPJ did manage to go up with the next two baskets, but a 10-0 burst from the Golden Knights – with Fustine hitting two straight 3-pointers and Matt Johnson (Chicago, Ill./Adlai E. Stevenson) adding another – flipped the script and made it 12-6 with 13:16 on the clock.
  • A fastbreak dunk and triple tied it up for the Cats, but Gannon stayed hot from beyond the arc, with Porter and Victor Olawoye (Elmont, N.Y./Elmont Memorial) hitting to make it 22-16. With another Olawoye trey and a slick layup from Kevin Dodds (Downingtown, Pa./Bishop Shanahan) helping to open up a 29-24 advantage for the hosts heading into the locker room.
  • UPJ forced a turnover early in the second half, starting a quick run that tied the game up at 29-all just over two minutes into the period. Kevin Dodds (Downingtown, Pa./Bishop Shanahan) drew a big charge on the defensive end the next trip up the court, and converted on the offensive end to halt that momentum and start a back-and-forth stretch.
  • The lead changed hands three times before Olawoye hit a trey to tie it up, then laid one in to make it 38-36 at the 12:51 mark. Mike Haysbert (Baltimore, Md./Western School of Technology and Environmental Science) pulled in an offensive rebound to keep things alive for a Porter 3-pointer, and on the next possession, Porter followed his own miss and converted on a stick-back to put the Knights up 43-36 and force a UPJ timeout with 11:51 left.
  • A three-point play by Jonathan Harewood (Baldwin, N.Y./St. Anthony's) gave Gannon its biggest lead of the game at 52-40 and finished off a 19-4 run with 8:32 on the clock. Another Olawoye 3 pushed the lead back to 10, and the freshman swiped a pass to start a fastbreak that ended in a pair of free throws to push it back to double digits.
  • Haysbert was big on the glass again with just over five minutes to play, pulling in an offensive board and going back up for the basket, and getting fouled on a defensive rebound to reach the foul line. His free throws made it 61-49 with 4:59 to play, but the Mountain Cats used turnovers and foul shots to creep back into it with their 10-0 run before the clutch plays late sealed the win for the Golden Knights.

GAME NOTES
  • Olawoye led Gannon with 22 points on 7-of-14 shooting, including five 3-pointers. The freshman was 3-of-5 from deep in the first half, hitting three big 3-pointers late in the period to help the Knights head to the locker room up 29-24.
  • In addition to his late-game plays, Porter finished with 15 points, seven rebounds and two assists. That's double digits in scoring in seven of the past 10 games, and back-to-back 15-point efforts.
  • Haysbert's four points all came in a 28-second span with less than six minutes to play. He also turned in eight rebounds, including five offensive boards that helped Gannon collect 23 offensive rebounds and 22 second-chance points.
  • Fustine turned in back-to-back double-digit scoring games for the first time in his career, hitting a pair of 3-pointers on the way to 10 points to go with a team-high nine rebounds and two steals.
  • Pitt-Johnstown entered the game 10th in the nation with a 51.3 shooting percentage. The Golden Knights held the Cats to just 38.6 percent (17-of-44), their least made field goals in a game this season and lowest shooting percentage since the season opener.
  • Gannon was 12-of-15 (80.0 percent) at the free throw line. It's the second straight game the Knights have shot at least 80 percent in a game after not shooting better than 70 percent from the line in their first 12 games.
  • The 10 made 3-pointers by the Golden Knights is the most since also hitting 10 against Kutztown in the PSAC semifinals March 4, 2017.

  • The 3 p.m. tip from the McKenna Center will feature live stats and live audio.
  • The Golden Knights and Griffins are tied 7-7 after 14 all-time meetings.
  • The Griffins sit at 3-10 (1-6 PSAC) after a 76-72 overtime loss at Clarion Wednesday.
