KEY SEQUENCE
  • Down at the half, Gannon reeled off a 24-4 run after Seton Hill scored the first bucket of the second period, taking the lead for good on a Victor Olawoye (Elmont, N.Y./Elmont Memorial) 3-pointer with 15:07. The Golden Knights opened up leads as large as 11, but the Griffins rallied to within two late before Daryl Porter (Southfield, Mich./Walled Lake Western) and Olawoye combined to go 6-for-6 from the line in the final 21 seconds to ice it.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • A slow offensive start opened up when the Griffins went on a 9-2 run to grab a 13-6 lead with 12:10 on the clock in the first half. A cold spell from the hosts allowed Gannon to jump back in it with a stretch of five straight made field goals, with DeAnte Cisero (Chicago, Ill./Montgomery County (Ky.)) converting on three straight in the paint and Olawoye nailing a 3-pointer to put the Golden Knights up 17-16 with 7:08 left in the half.
  • Seton Hill was able to answer though, going up by two on a 3-pointer. Porter tied it on the next possession, but the Griffins twice netted five straight points to go up eight in the final minute. Porter hit a free throw late to cut it to seven, but the hosts led 29-22 heading into the break, and added a layup 15 seconds into the second half to push it to a nine-point lead.
  • Back-to-back missed jumpers followed, but 54 seconds into the second period, Kevin Dodds (Downingtown, Pa./Bishop Shanahan) finished off a feed from Olawoye under the basket and completed a three-point play to get Gannon's big run started.
  • The Knights rolled off 12 consecutive points, with Porter scoring half those. Gannon missed just two field goals during that stretch, and grabbed the offensive board on one of those for second-chance points. By the end of that run, which lasted just 2:33, the guests were up by three.
  • After SHU tied it with a triple the next time down the court, Gannon again got hot, finishing the second half of its game-changing run with a 12-1 spurt. The Knights got a 3-pointer from Olawoye and a Porter jumper to get started, and treys out of Olawoye and Joe Fustine (Erie, Pa./Cathedral Prep) ballooned the lead to 10 at 45-35.
  • A free throw from Fustine made it an 11-point advantage with 10:39 to play, and Gannon pushed its lead out to 11 four more times over the next eight minutes, the last time on a layup from Jonathan Harewood (Baldwin, N.Y./St. Anthony's) with 2:38 on the clock.
  • Seton Hill got a 3-pointer on the next possession, and that was followed by a missed shot from Fustine at the 1:55 mark, which was the final field goal attempt of the game for the Knights. The Griffins hit three more 3-pointers down the stretch to suddenly make it a 61-59 game with 34 seconds to play, but clutch shooting from the line held off the comeback attempt.

GAME NOTES
  • From the 1:03 mark until the final horn, the Golden Knights converted on 12 consecutive free throws to ice the game. Porter had half of those, while Harewood, Dodds and Olawoye each hit a pair.
  • Gannon shot 20-of-24 (83.3 percent) from the free throw line in the second half, and hit 79.3 percent (23-of-29) for the game to continue its hot shooting from the charity stripe. The team has shot at least 79 percent from the line in each of its last three games after not topping 70 percent in its first 12.
  • The Knights were 21-of-49 from the field. That 42.9-percent shooting is the fourth-highest this season for Gannon, the best since hitting 44.2 against Notre Dame (Ohio) on Dec. 15.
  • Porter finished the game with 25 points on 7-of-15 shooting from the floor and 11-of-14 from the line. It's the highest total this season for a Gannon player, and the fourth consecutive game with double-digit points for the senior.
  • Porter also added seven rebounds and four steals.
  • Olawoye joined Porter in double figures, netting 15, including a perfect 3-for-3 from beyond the arc, to go with six rebounds.
  • Dodds set a career high with 10 rebounds to go with eight points, an assist and a steal.
  • The two-game win streak is the first of the season for Gannon, which quickly finds itself in sixth place in a bunched middle of the pack in the PSAC West.
UP NEXT
  • Gannon continues its short road swing with a short trip to Edinboro Wednesday evening.
  • The 7:30 p.m. tip from McComb Fieldhouse will feature live video, live stats and live audio.
  • The Golden Knights hold a 69-38 lead in the all-time series against Edinboro, which is Gannon's most-played series.
  • The Fighting Scots sit at 4-9 (1-7 PSAC) after a 100-88 loss at Pitt-Johnstown Saturday for their fifth consecutive defeat.
