GAMEDAY MEDIA CENTER
KEY SEQUENCE
  • California closed the third quarter on a 10-2 scoring run to pull ahead by double digits heading into the final quarter of play. Chelsea Rourke (Gibsonia, Pa./Pine-Richland) surged ahead for a fastbreak layup at the 4:26 mark of the third quarter, trimming the Vulcan lead to six at 48-42, but the Lady Knights would only trail by single digits on just two more occasions in the contest at the visitors pulled away on Saturday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • A rapid start saw both teams playing quickly and the score tied at nine following the first media timeout of the afternoon. The Lady Knights worked their way back from a 9-2 deficit in the early going with a Nicole LaCava (Hermitage, Pa./Hickory) layup (7:11), a Sydney Mitchell (Halethorpe, Md./Seton Keough) three (6:37) and a Chelsea Rourke (Gibsonia, Pa./Pine-Richland) lay-in (5:58). The Vulcans countered with the next six points for a 15-9 lead and Seairra Barrett notched a layup, extending the California advantage to 21-13.
  • The first Gannon field goal in the second quarter did not come until the 8:25 mark on a putback from Lauren Tewes (Waterford, Mich./Waterford Kettering), which trimmed the Vulcan lead to 25-19. LaCava made a living at the foul line in the second frame, converting six attempts in a 2:31 span of game action. Mitchell lined up a three-pointer off a pass from Rourke at 5:55 in the second, which sliced the Cal lead to just three at 29-26. A pass found its way through traffic and into the waiting arms of Breanna Ranson, who converted a jumper from the right block for the Lady Knights final bucket of the first half.
  • Trailing 38-29 at the half, Gannon opened the third quarter with a layup from LaCava at 9:44. Mitchell brought Gannon to within six points (40-34) with a three off a crisp pass from Aiora Rivas (Ibiza, Spain/IES CTEIB). Rourke pick-pocketed the ball away and surged ahead for a layup at 4:26 in the third as Gannon trailed by just six at 48-42, but the Vulcans used a 10-2 run to take a comfortable 58-44 edge to end the third quarter.
  • A 9-0 spurt by the Lady Knights brought Gannon to within nine at 60-51 with 8:16 left in the contest. Cal responded with a 9-4 run to end the quarter and earn the 69-55 victory.
