GAMEDAY MEDIA CENTER
KEY SEQUENCE
  • With Gannon answering Cal runs throughout the second half, the Vulcans were finally able to make one stick late, running off 10 straight points over a two-minute span to suddenly make it a 64-51 lead with less than four minutes to play. The guests forced two turnovers during the run, turning them into five points along the way.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Making his first start of the season, Joe Fustine (Erie, Pa./Cathedral Prep) hit the first shot of the game, nailing a 3-pointer from the left wing on the opening possession. Kevin Dodds (Downingtown, Pa./Bishop Shanahan), also making his first start, added a layup on the next trip down the court to keep the Knights ahead.
  • Cal kept pulling back to within one point to answer, but a pair of free throws by Fustine started a 9-0 run for the hosts that turned it into a 10-point lead. Daryl Porter (Southfield, Mich./Walled Lake Western) netted five straight points in the run, and his jumper from the top of the key with 13:06 on the clock stretched the lead to 20-7.
  • A 3-pointer from Brent Pegram got the Vulcans going, and a three-point play pulled them to within six a minute later. With the score 25-18 midway through the half, Dodds got a finish inside, followed by a triple out of Porter to make it 30-18.
  • Seven straight points by the guests pulled it back to single digits, but Fustine nailed another 3-pointer to make it 33-25 with 4:11 left in the period. Cal responded with the final nine points of the half, going 4-for-4 from the charity stripe to take its first lead at 34-33.
  • Fustine once again got a half started with a trey, sinking one from the top of the arc to give the Golden Knights a 36-34 advantage, but Pegram did the same on Cal's next possession to put the guests back in front. Matt Johnson (Chicago, Ill./Adlai E. Stevenson) hit a couple of free throws to flip the lead again, but the Vulcans again followed with a 3, this time adding two free throws to build a 42-38 lead.
  • A Mike Haysbert (Baltimore, Md./Western School of Technology and Environmental Science) stick-back tied things up at 42-all with 15:14 on the clock, but Zyan Collins followed with a 3-pointer for Cal that gave it the lead for good. A three-point play from Jonathan Harewood (Baldwin, N.Y./St. Anthony's) and a free throw out of Porter got the Knights to within one, with the Vulcans once again responding with a 3 to start a 7-0 run.
  • Gannon still wouldn't go away though, with Johnson going on a personal 5-0 spurt, capped by a trey, to suddenly make it a one-possession game at 54-51 before Cal went on its game-sealing run.
