KEY SEQUENCE
  • An evenly played opening 20 minutes translated into a tightly contested second half, but Millersville pulled ahead when it mattered, meticulously reeling off a 14-2 run over the final 7:06 of the game to snag the 63-57 home victory over the Lady Knights. Lauren Lister made two foul shots at 1:28 in the fourth quarter as part of a stellar offensive day to lift the hosts ahead for the remainder of the game.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Gannon forged ahead 6-0 over the opening 3:15 of the first quarter with baskets from Lauren Tewes (Waterford, Mich./Waterford Kettering), Chelsea Rourke (Gibsonia, Pa./Pine-Richland) and Sydney Mitchell (Halethorpe, Md./Seton Keough). Nicole LaCava (Hermitage, Pa./Hickory) extended the visitors lead to 8-3 with a lay-in that came after a Mitchell steal on the other end. Millersville climbed back to tie the score at eight, but Boston McKinney (Bolivar, Ohio/Tuscarawas Valley) answered with back-to-back trey balls at 4:45 and 4:12 to lift Gannon ahead 14-8.
  • L. Tewes scored on a coast-to-coast layup after recording a steal as Gannon led 18-11. Rourke capped the scoring for Gannon in the quarter with a pair of foul shots at the 1:21 mark. Samantha Brusha continued her hot shooting from beyond the arc for Millersville, converting a three 9:32 of the second quarter for the first bucket for either team in the frame. Brusha eventually tied the score at 20 with a layup at 7:08 but the Lady Knights countered back with scores from Rourke (6:39) and LaCava (5:41) for a 24-20 lead in the first half.
  • Tori Obenrader (Fryburg, Pa./North Clarion) lined up a three off a find from Haley Tewes (Waterford, Mich./Waterford Kettering) to push the visitors ahead 29-22 before consecutive layups from Lauren Lister trimmed the Millersville deficit to 29-26 with 3:45 left in the first half.
  • After a scoreless stretch that lasted nearly two minutes, McKinney made her third three-pointer of the first half at 1:55 in the second quarter to expand the Gannon lead to six points at 32-26. The Marauders ended the opening half with the final five points over the last 1:29, but Gannon still took a 32-30 lead into the locker room.
  • Both teams scored a bucket to open the second half and neither side could muster a lead of more than four points until Courtney Dimoff stuck a three at 4:28 in the third to push Millersville ahead 44-38. Rourke ended a brief drought for Gannon with a jumper at 4:03, whittling the Gannon deficit to four (44-40) in the third quarter.
  • After Millersville pushed its second half lead back to six, Gannon got contributions from several players off the bench. Elise Torrence (Bexley, Ohio/Bexley) found herself open underneath for a layup  from Mitchell and Ivana Twumasi (Jane and Finch, Ontario/Central Tech) cashed in a pair of foul shots as Gannon trailed 46-44 with 2:11 left in the third quarter.
  • Micthell carved inside for a layup but Millersville ended the third quarter in a high note with a timely three from Dimoff, lifting the hosts to a narrow 49-48 edge at the end of the third quarter. Gannon responded with a three of its own, as Mitchell drilled the triple off a pass from McKinney at the 8:53 mark of the fourth quarter, handing the advantage back to Gannon at 51-49. LaCava scored on a putback attempt at 7:06 as Gannon led 54-49, but the hosts once again responded with a run, this time scoring seven of the next nine points to tie the game at 56.
  • Neither team found the bucket from 4:51 to 2:08, accounting for nearly three minutes of game action before the Marauders scored three points at the foul line to take a 59-56 lead with 1:20 remaining in the contest.
  • Mitchell converted a free throw with 33 seconds left as Gannon trailed by two (59-57), but the Marauders leaned on their leading scorer (Lister) to close out the game, and she did just that.

GAME NOTES
  • Gannon has the edge in the series with an 8-4 lead in 12 all-time meetings with Millersville.
  • Today's victory snapped a three-game losing streak for Millersville. The matchup did not count toward the PSAC standings for Gannon, but did for Millersville, in an attempt to balance the schedule upon Cheyney dropping out of the league.
  • The Lady Knights shot 56.5% from the floor in the opening half and canned 57.1% of its three-point attempts. The second half was a different story- particularly in the fourth quarter- with Gannon finishing the game 1-of-13 from the floor and 1-of-10 from beyond the arc.
  • Despite the late shooting woes, Gannon had a balanced offensive output against Millersville. LaCava (10) and Mitchell (10) led the way in scoring, but McKinney (9), Rourke (8), Tewes (8) and Twumasi (7) all made at least two field goals for the Lady Knights.
  • LaCava extends her streak of double figure scoring games to seven straight contests. Meanwhile, Mitchell has posted scoring efforts of 11 and 10 in the past two outings for Gannon.
  • Some of the top scorers in the conference have lived up to the billing against Gannon this season. Lister, who entered the matchup as one of only four players in the league to average 20 points/game, poured in 30 points for the Marauders on 12-22 shooting. Ariel Jones (Shippensburg) posted 29 points against the Lady Knights on December 18 while Seairra Barrett (California) notched 22 points on January 5.
  • Millersville entered the matchup near the bottom half of the league in scoring defense, ranking 13th out of 17 conference schools at 70.6 points/allowed per game. The Marauders had allowed at least 70 points in each of their past three losses, but limited Gannon to 57 today.
  • Against a team that had one of the worst rebounding margins in the league, Gannon held just a 34-29 edge on the boards over Millersville. LaCava snared a team-high seven rebounds for the Lady Knights.
