KEY SEQUENCE
  • Tied 67-67 after a late charge from Slippery Rock, an offensive rebound and stick-back from Ivana Twumasi (Jane and Finch, Ontario/Central Tech) pushed Gannon ahead with 1:02 to play. That foreshadowed the next offensive possession for the Lady Knights, who got big offensive boards from Sydney Mitchell (Halethorpe, Md./Seton Keough) and Nicole LaCava (Hermitage, Pa./Hickory) to eat up more than 30 seconds of clock. By the time LaCava sank a pair of free throws after being fouled, the hosts were up by four with just 14 seconds left, and were able to put the game away.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Layups from Chelsea Rourke (Gibsonia, Pa./Pine-Richland) and LaCava in the first two minutes posted the Lady Knights to a 4-2 lead, but Madison Johnson hit a 3-pointer to start a run from deep for the Rock. Mitchell momentarily gave the hosts the lead again, but two straight triple out of Ciara Patterson shot the guests ahead.
  • That started a 16-4 run for the Rock, during which they went 7-of 8 from the floor and pushed their lead out to 21-10 by the 1:42 mark of the opening quarter. LaCava brought it back to single digits before the end of the frame, but SRU responded by starting the scoring in the second period.
  • Gannon followed that up with their 14-0 run that lasted less than four minutes, as Rourke netted seven straight points in just over a minute. Sydney Mitchell (Halethorpe, Md./Seton Keough) capped that run with a 3-pointer, and after the Rock final stopped the barrage with a basket at the 5:14 mark, the Lady Knights ripped off nine more in a row.
  • Rourke started that burst, and the Knights finished it by converting seven straight from the free throw line in just under 90 seconds. Lauren Tewes (Waterford, Mich./Waterford Kettering), LaCava and Rourke all hit a pair during the run.
  • The Rock crept back in it from down 10 after the run to down seven by the break, and a Brooke Hinderliter 3-pointer nine seconds into the half suddenly sliced that to four at 36-32. An SRU layup at the 7:08 mark got the guests to within two at 38-36, but Gannon followed with another big run.
  • Boston McKinney (Bolivar, Ohio/Tuscarawas Valley) and Mitchell nailed back-to-back 3-pointers to kick-start an 11-0 run that put Gannon up by double digits. Mitchell added another basket and LaCava converted a three-point play to go up 49-36 with less than five minutes to in the third.
  • Seven straight points for the Rock spanning the break between the third and fourth got the visitors back to within six, and SRU's Ciara Patterson followed with five straight points herself, to make it a one-possession game once again at 56-53.
  • The Rock kept the pressure on, and after two straight baskets, tied it up at 65-all. A pair of LaCava free throws put the Knights back in front, but another basket from Slippery Rock tied it with 1:36 remaining before Gannon hit the boards to seal it.

GAME NOTES
  • Gannon moves to 3-2 on the season when three players score in double figures.
  • The Lady Knights take a 37-11 lead in the all-time series with SRU.
  • With career highs in both points (17) and rebounds (10), Mitchell becomes the third player this season to record a double-double. She also added five assists in the all-around effort for Gannon.
  • Mitchell joins LaCava and Tori Obenrader (Fryburg, Pa./North Clarion) as the only other Lady Knights with a double-double this year.
  • Rourke finished with a game-high 20 points, tying her previous career high against Fairmont State in November. The Gibsonia, Pa. native also logged 40 or more minutes for the second time this season, with the other contest against Elizabeth City State going into overtime.
  • LaCava has posted 10 or more points in eight straight outings and in 15 of the last 16 games.
  • Converting 80.6% of its foul shots for the game, Gannon was 10-of-12 (83.3%) from the charity stripe in the opening 20 minutes.
  • Slippery Rock entered the matchup at the bottom of the league in scoring defense (74.6) and rebounding margin (-6.1). The Lady Knights held an impressive 45-33 edge on the glass over The Rock.
  • Rourke has scored 10 or more points in four of the past five games.
  • The Lady Knights have made at least four three-pointers in each of the last four games.
  • In what was an important game for both teams in a tightly packed PSAC West, Gannon is now one of four teams (Seton Hill, Pitt-Johnstown and Slippery Rock) with a 6-7 mark in league play.

UP NEXT
  • Gannon starts its second trip through conference play against Pitt-Johnstown on Saturday, February 2 at 1:00 p.m.
  • Live video, live audio and live stats will be provided for the matchup from the UPJ Sports Center.
  • Gannon will look to avenge a hard-fought 68-61 home loss to the Mountain Cats back on January 9.
  • UPJ holds a 23-11 all-time lead in the series with the Lady Knights.
