KEY SEQUENCE
  • While the teams went back-and-forth in the opening portions of the first half, the second-ranked IUP Crimson Hawks answered a quick second quarter run by Gannon with a 13-0 scoring surge of its own to take a 32-19 lead with 1:30 remaining in the first half. The Lady Knights struggled to find any kind of offense in the second half, shooting just 20% from the floor in the third and fourth quarters.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • An efficient offensive start for both IUP and Gannon saw each team shoot above the 50% mark in the opening frame. The Crimson Hawks opened the quarter with an 8-2 run, and buckets from Chelsea Rourke (Gibsonia, Pa./Pine-Richland), Haley Tewes (Waterford, Mich./Waterford Kettering) and Aiora Rivas (Ibiza, Spain/IES CTEIB) kept Gannon in the mix, trailing 17-9 at the end of the first quarter.
  • H. Tewes quickly converted a three-pointer just 34 seconds into the second quarter and a layup from Rourke helped Gannon slice into the IUP lead. Back-to-back baskets from H. Tewes at 7:13 and 6:43 tied the score at 19 in the second frame, but the Crimson Hawks roared back by closing the half with 13 of the next 17 points for a 32-23 edge over the Lady Knights.
  • Jump shots from Rourke and Nicole LaCava (Hermitage, Pa./Hickory) at 9:30 and 8:13 in the third quarter brought Gannon to within five at 32-27. That momentum was short-lived for the Lady Knights, who found themselves on the wrong end of a 12-0 burst from the Crimson Hawks in the third quarter.
  • A free throw from Rourke, which came on a technical foul to IUP's Brittany Robinson, ended the Gannon scoring drought which lasted over six minutes. Two more foul shots from LaCava made the score 43-30 and the Lady Knights went into the fourth trailing 47-32.
  • IUP maintained its lead, expanding the edge to 21 with 8:34 remaining. The hosts kept the Lady Knights at bay offensively for the remainder of the matchup.

GAME NOTES
  • Turnovers plagued the Lady Knights all night long, but especially in the first half. While Gannon had 27 turnovers on the night, 17 of them came in the opening 20 minutes.
  • Gannon was held to a season-low 40 points against the Crimson Hawks. Wednesday's game was the fourth time this season the Lady Knights were held to under 50 points. Offense has been tough to come by for everybody against IUP this season, who are limiting opponents to 47.7 points/game.
  • The third quarter drought for the Lady Knights allowed the Crimson Hawks to pull away in the first game of 2019. Gannon did not score a field goal in the final 8:13 of game time in the third frame and hit just one of its final nine field goal attempts.
  • H. Tewes notched her first double-digit scoring game of the season with 10 points for the Lady Knights. She logged a season-high 19 minutes and went 4-of-11 from the floor.
  • Three Crimson Hawks finished the night in double figures, including a game-high 18 points for Robinson. It was part of an impressive effort inside for the Crimson Hawks, who outscored Gannon 44-14 in the paint.
  • Tori Obenrader (Fryburg, Pa./North Clarion) snagged nine rebounds for Gannon, marking the 10th game of the season with at least five boards.

UP NEXT
  • Gannon returns to the court and continues PSAC West play on Saturday, January 5 against California (Pa.) from the Hammermill Center in Erie.
  • Live stats, live video and live audio will be available for the 1:00 p.m. tipoff from the Hammermill Center.
  • The Vulcans are coming off their first loss of the 2018-19 campaign, falling on the road to Edinboro by a 99-92 margin.
